The perfect light and refreshing margarita recipe.
I'll just say it -- we're kind of famous for our homemade margarita recipe. Famous...with our friends. ;)
Our margaritas are highly sought after and absolutely DELICIOUS. We have a secret ingredient that takes most scratch margarita recipes from just OK to the perfect mix of sweet and tart.
My husband perfected this recipe years ago after we found one in a restaurant that we loved. I'll share two other slightly different options as well. ALL are so good!
I'll share some variations on our ingredients that also make for a delicious drink later in the post!
Why we love this margarita recipe
For us, the key to the best delicious margarita is the orange flavor. Lime is needed of course, but we prefer the freshness and taste of extra orange. I much prefer them to overly lime tasting versions.
Also, we don't care for the standard margarita mixes that use triple sec. They are usually too tart and lack this fresh taste that we love.
There are simpler recipes for sure, but this one keeps our friends coming back for more! It's the perfect mix of tart and sweet!
How to make the perfect homemade margarita
You'll need three different liquors. I took pics so you know what to look for:
The best homemade margarita recipe
(we use a shot glass for each "part" but you can increase that size for a pitcher)
Crushed ice is our preference
Two to four parts lime juice (if you can hand squeeze, even better)
Two parts tequila (we prefer Silver Patron)
One part Patron Citronge orange liqueur*
One part Cointreau*
Two tablespoons+ powdered sugar (our secret ingredient!) to taste
Oranges, limes and/or salt to garnish
This is simple recipe, but there are a few things to consider:
- The variation in lime juice depends on how strong you want your margarita. Start with two (it will be STRONG, but keep in mind the ice will water it down) and go up from there to suit your preference.
- Make sure to use the orange Citronge -- they have a few different flavors available.
- Powdered sugar gives the drink sweetness and keeps it from getting too tart. (Tartness ruins a good margarita, in my opinion.) Play with the amount to your liking -- you may want less, may want more. Be sure to stir/shake well!
Easy variations on our homemade margaritas
- Salt your rim by dipping the glass in water or wiping the rim with a lime, then dipping in salt all the way around. Play around with different flavored salt! I love a spicy version.
- Grand Marnier is a great substitution for either of the orange liqueurs
- If you'd prefer less alcohol, a splash of orange juice always works!
- Agave or simple syrup is also a great substitute for the powdered sugar
- We love ours with crushed ice -- the crunch adds to the experience 😀
It's quite easy and so good!
The initial ingredients will last you a long time:
I've also found a mix at Trader Joe's. It's the only mix I've found that has that fresh taste I love:
I sometimes use this in place of the lime juice and powdered sugar. It's very good! Not as good as our recipe, but yummy!
There you go. I've been meaning to share this with you for years! Do you have a margarita recipe you love?

Have you tried my sangria recipe? It's another hit!:

The most perfect Margarita I have ever had was at Joe's Stone Crab in Miami. I don't know the proportions exactly...I've played with them over the years...but it had Cointreau, fresh lime, a splash of simple syrup and Grand Marnier. Yours sounds like it would be right up there with Joe's, so, I must try!
ReplyDeleteYes indeed. I was actually searching for the recipe and landed on this page.
DeleteGoing to give this a try. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI've been trying to make the "perfect" margarita at home for YEARS. Tried this last night and WOW ... it was really really AMAZING! I won't look any further for that perfect recipe because I've now found it. Powdered sugar?? Who knew?? Thank you so much.
