Big decor updates with only $15

June 29, 2018

Thanks for the kind comments on my latest project! The trim and paint made such a difference in the foyer. It got me thinking about some of the projects I've done over the years that make a big impact but don't cost much. I gathered a few to share that cost $15 and under specifically -- it seems too good to be true that such a small amount could change a space that much, but it absolutely can!

First up, a quart of paint can go a loooong way! It's enough to paint a large piece of furniture like my favorite black dresser:
Tips for painting furniture

I'm a big fan of adding black accents around the house -- an old dresser is the perfect pallet! This had a wood finish I didn't love and the black made a BIG difference. (And the brass handles look a million times better!)

A quart is more than enough to paint a few doors a daring color:

Just be sure to read this post to check the paint on your doors first! I haven't wanted to add the black doors to this house till recently...but now the urge has started creeping. ;) We'll see if I do it!

Of course painted doors don't have to be dark -- any color would do! Even lighter doors make a beautiful accent.

Fifteen bucks in wood goes a very long way! I created three large DIY picture ledges for around $30, but if you used inexpensive pine, you could get close to these sizes easy. They are a GREAT way to fill a big wall:

This is one of my absolute favorite projects ever! It's just silly how easy they are -- especially when you see how much they cost to buy!

You can make my DIY floating shelves for cheap as well. I loved these in our old laundry room:

Just adding a few of these makes for a nice moment in a space.

Now onto the biggies! If you use the luan I mentioned in the last post you can make one 4x8 sheet of wood make a big impact.

Just that simple detail was a lovely addition.

If you have the strips cut thinner, your sheet of wood will go even further! I did our old guest room accent wall with one sheet:

And back then those were only $13 a pop, they've gone up to $15. ;)

If you missed my latest project, you can see how I made that same stuff go far in our foyer

And finally, depending on the size, a DIY chalkboard wall could be done under $15 as well:

A quart of chalkboard paint goes a long way. You could cover a small wall with it to make a fun spot for you the kids. ;) I especially love them in a pantry, kitchen or mud room.

By the way, that good to be home art was done with well under $15 too! Not quite the large impact, but still cute!

Do you see the theme here? Wood and and just a little paint can go a long way to making big changes in your home! These are some of my absolute favorites because they ALL add interest and character to a house!

Have you tried any projects similar to these? I'd love to hear if you have! I didn't include the cost of paint (on the walls) or stain (on the wood) because one can of either one will last through a ton of projects.
