A new window in the shower

May 19, 2017

This is big people. Actually, it's really tiny. :) This bathroom has been a black hole for 13 years -- it's the only room in the house that didn't have a window. I've learned over the years that natural light is the best decorating accessory and it just plain improves my mood. We are lucky to have a ton of windows in our house and I would add even more.

So for as long as I can remember I've wanted a window in this bathroom. It's been ready for a few weeks now:

And this morning it went in:
Adding a window to a bathroom shower

I had to laugh because it is so tiny! 😆 We only had a small area available -- I didn't want it too low for obvious reasons (and I didn't want a lot of water getting up there) and we had to deal with the header above. We could have made it wider but I wanted it to be proportional to the shower. Because of the size I had to special order it and it came in in less than two weeks.

This window is small but mighty! I keep walking by the bathroom just to see the outside. It's fabulous and lets in tons of light.

Before with the lights off this room was a cavern. Now the sunshine fills the room! Here it is with no lights on:

Alllll the heart eyes.

That's it. That's all I wanted to show you today. :) Our precious tiny window. Ha! I'm just so stinking excited. Big stuff happening in here over the next few days so I'll share the progress with you next week!

Have a great one!

  2. I like it! We have a window in our bathroom too (with frosted glass). It's not completely transparent, but natural light makes a world of a difference.

  3. Ahh! This has me wanting to put a window in the kids bathroom. Their's is set up just like yours and it is a black hole. I am kicking myself for not insisting on it when we were building.

  4. There's nothing like sunlight to make everything better! Looking good, can't wait to see the rest!

  5. I would be very interested in seeing a before/after of the outside of your house where this went in. How does this addition change the outside?

    1. I want to know the same question. How does that window look from the outside?

    2. Me three....How does it look from the outside?

    3. It's just a little sliver of a window up high. You actually don't even notice it. The color matches our other windows so it looks similar. :)

  6. Would you be comfortable sharing a cost range? I've toyed with the idea of adding some windows to our master bedroom but have had a hard time finding any guidance on estimates (realizing that it differs based on market).

    1. Ditto on this. We have the same issue and if it is an expensive change then it might not be worth it. Thanks

    2. The window was $180 and the install was wrapped up with other stuff they did -- I'd estimate around $250? But our guys give us a GREAT deal on stuff so that's probably not typical.

  7. A window makes all of the difference! We weren't able to add a window into our bathroom remodel and it really took me a little while to get over it.

  8. We added a sun tunnel to our windowless bathroom. They are less work & expense than adding a skylight. We kept trying to turn the light off for the first couple of weeks. It's that bright.

    1. We had a sunpipe fitted too, but at the top of our stairs where there are no windows at all and if the doors are closed it was d.a.r.k.! 15 years on and still bathed in light! Brilliant to get natural light anywhere.

    2. I've always wanted to add one of those to our bathroom and closet! Someday we may do it. :)

  9. It does help for sure! Now don't cover up all that gorgeous light with a shower curtain! Have you thought of using a half glas shower "wall". They have them all over Europe and you can find them on Pinterest. I love the look. You can add a shower curtain that is kept pulled to one side if privacy is an issue. May I ask how much was the cost of installing a window like that? Our guest bath is a cave too. I'm thinking of adding a solatube

    1. I have! Although I still find water gets out and makes a mess in a smaller space like this one. On bigger showers it's fine. I'm not planning to go with that on this shower for that reason and the cost. I have a plan in mind so that plenty of light will still make it into the room. Stay tuned for that! :) The window was $180 special order.

  10. I can't believe what a difference such a small window can make. Both our upstairs bathrooms don't have windows either and it drives me crazy! Good job ☺️

  13. Both of my bathrooms are interior rooms. I was lucky enough to be able to add skylights, as I bought the house before it was built. I have another in the laundry/garage entryway. Natural light makes ALL the difference. All three rooms are super bright, all day long.

  14. How nice! I wish our bathrooms had windows. You are so right about natural light! The only way to get those rays inside our bathrooms will be with solar tubes. Can't wait to see your finished project!

  15. Would you mind sharing the info on this window? I've been wanting to add something very similar to my son's bathroom but just haven't had the nerve to find out what it'd cost to do. In our case, the exterior is brick, so it'd be a little more involved, but the added light would be so worth it.

    1. The cost of the window was $180 and we ordered it from Lowe's! If you went without the mullions (now that we have it in I don't think we needed them), it would probably be a little less. We went with new construction instead of replacement because it was a brand new to this spot. I can't help much on installation because they included it with a bunch of stuff. It was maybe $200-$250 of our total bill.
