DIY barn door designs and tutorials

As many of you know, I tend to get into decor trends way late. Usually by the time they're not cool anymore, I like them. It's my thing. I'm pretty sure the barn door trend is here to stay though and I've been trying to figure out where I could make one work in our house for a good year now. I have a couple ideas in mind but I'd have to make some additional changes first.
A few months ago a friend of mine found a beautiful barn door ready-made at Home Depot and I was intrigued. I saw this one at Lowe's the other day:
As I mentioned when I shared it on social media -- the price is hard to swallow when a sliding door can be built fairly inexpensively. BUT I certainly know that sometimes it sure is nice to just buy something and not make it! ;)
It's great that you can get one so easily now! If you do a search on Craigslist you can usually find a local resource as well. But if you're interested in making your own I've gathered a few great resources for you!
This is one of those projects that seems daunting but is really a simple project -- you'll need a saw and a drill or nail gun to make the door. The only consistent problem I hear is hanging the door hardware -- it sounds like that is more difficult than making the door!
Jenna Sue shared how to make two versions of a barn door:
I like both options and love the double doors!
My friend Traci shared how they made a barn door for their mud room:
I love the pretty "X" design on the bottom!
If you love the look of barn doors but don't have a good spot for one, you can always just lean it against a wall:
Keep in mind you can use any door too -- and it doesn't have to be quite so rustic. Christina repurposed a hollow core door for her kitchen:
I love that! The new trim completely updates it!
I love this more modern take on the sliding door:
Rachel took a paneled door and repurposed it into a sliding door:
That pretty glass door knob completes it!
I LOVE that Jaime took this trend and created furniture with the same look:
She includes detailed plans for this piece -- wouldn't that be lovely as a buffet in a kitchen or dining room?
You can find the sliding hardware at hardware stores now but I think the best selection is on Amazon. The prices are great -- years ago it seemed they were a lot more.
This traditional sliding barn door hardware is $60:
And this one is only $50!:
This one is $50 too and I love the unique design:
That's the hardware my friend used on a white door and it's so pretty.
The more modern versions are harder to come by and seem to be a little more expensive. This stainless steel sliding hardware is $80:
I love the look, whether it's modern or more traditional! And a sliding door gives you more useable space in a room too -- when a door doesn't swing out into the room you gain a little bit of square footage. I have taken down many doors in our house for just that reason!
Have you built or bought a sliding door for your home? I don't think this trend is going anywhere soon! Of course I'll let you know if I make one for our home. :)

Love these ideas! Happy Friday ♥
ReplyDeleteI have never actually seen one in person, but I wonder about if they are floppy, or do they scratch the baseboards? Do they make a tight seal in the door frame like a regular door?
ReplyDeletefell in love with these beauties last year and made one for our bedroom/bathroom. Absolutely Love these barn doors. Since the door is seen from both sides, I stained both the sides differently.

I prefer the look of pocket doors, though that requires a lot more work and planning around electrical switches. If I was building a house, I would put them all over the place.
ReplyDeleteI removed a door to my laundry room since there was another door that would close off the area from the rest of the house. Love it. Gave me a lot of room on one wall to rearrange things and I even put a chair in there to be able to relax while waiting for that last minute on the dryer.

I had no idea that the prices had come down so dramatically! Yay! Thanks for sharing all that info!
ReplyDeleteOur playroom door is always in the way and we can not put pocket doors there. This would be an awesome solution to the problem!
ReplyDeleteI'm obsessed with these doors! I saw some at Home Depot and I almost purchased!!
