Cozy guest room updates

Hello all! I’m back today with an update to the guest room that I’m LOVING. This room is undergoing a small redo over the next few weeks and this was the first step.
I’ve enjoyed working with Better Homes and Gardens to show off some of their products over the past few months and I think this one is my absolute favorite. As a reminder, this is how our guest room looked as of a couple years ago after I painted the ombre wall:
I was working off the design we had in there when this was my stepdaughter’s room – the green is much better:
But the ombre look is still feeling a little “young” to me – I don’t hate it, I just want to make the room feel just a teensy bit more sophisticated, hence the small updates I’m making.
So I started with bed – we had that floral green and white duvet set for years now, but it had to go because of a spill that stained it. On our bed I would probably just hide the stain, but when guests use it I’d rather have the bedding perfectly clean.
Also, the green in the bedding was kind of a chartreuse green and it was really, really hard to decorate around. So when I couldn’t get the stain out I was kind of happy I could replace it. ;)
This is one of the brightest rooms in our house – the light just pours in here. I wanted to go with that and make it feel happy, but still cozy. The first addition were the SWEETEST blue and green floral sheets from BHG:
They are seriously the most adorable sheets I’ve ever seen. I know I just said I wanted to go a little more adult in this room and here I am talking about the new adorable sheets, but I couldn’t resist them.
I love them so much I wanted to put them in our room, but they didn't work in there at ALL. The guest room is perfect. (By the way, I can’t find these online but I’m working on it!)
The comforter is what I’m most excited about though. I have wanted one of these pintuck comforters, in white, forEVER. I drooled over them at expensive stores but never bit the bullet. Then the knock off versions started coming out but the reviews weren’t great (some use buttons that pop off and the “tuck” disappears). So when I found the BHG version and the reviews were great I was on that FAST:
People – I LOVE this bedding. (Here’s the link to it.) I washed it and it’s sooooo soft and fluffy. A fluffy bed is always so inviting, right? It washed great and came out with minimal wrinkles. (I was worried about that.)
The best part is it is is less than $40 for the comforter and the shams. Hello. That is awesome. We’ve had duvet covers for years and it’s nice to have a comforter to just throw on there – no messing around.
I mentioned this room is going to get a few more updates soon, but until then I added a few other little changes that will make our guests feel at home. This weathered frame was so pretty and I have to show you this little detail – you just turn around the paper inside and it’s instant art:
I especially love that for a guest room where you don’t really want to put photos of your family. I mean, I’m sure they would love waking up to your cute faces, but I think the art is nce too.
I love the print so I’m going to keep that in there, but I also created a simple printable that I’ll keep inside and put out when guests stay with us:

Here’s a better shot of the ombre wall:
That nightstand is actually an old sewing table that I found on the side of the road. It’s still one of my favorite redos of all time. :) That vase is really a lantern – I’ve been using it to hold flowers around the house though. Love it and the rope handle!
Another little detail that I’m a little obsessed with is the plug in wax warmer I found:
I got a linen scented wax and I’ve had this on all day every day – it makes the whole upstairs smell so fresh. It’s not overpowering either – I don’t like a strong linen scent.
It’s the little things like this nightlight and the comforting scent that I LOVE. I hope it puts our guests at ease. I had it on last night and looked in the room and it felt so cozy and comfy:
I almost went to sleep in there, no lie. That bed is calling to me. I may have to do a nap in here at the very least:
I’m seriously so pleased with the new bedding. Next up – some new paint, hopefully a DIY headboard, window treatments and moving some furniture around. For now I’m really happy with how it’s coming together:

ReplyDeletetodayimet(at)yahoo(dot)com
My husband and I bought our first house last April and got married last June, so we were too busy moving in and getting ready for the wedding to spend much time on gardening/the yard last year. I would use the $100 toward flowers and other outdoor decor from Walmart.
ReplyDeleteI would love some new bedding for our master bedroom!
ReplyDeleteNikki
nikkidalzell at gmail dot com
I would spend part of the card on bedding (I LOVE that comforter) and the rest at the garden center on flowers... :)
ReplyDeleteI must have that comforter. I have an all white one in our guest room, but THIS....THIS one is exactly like the image I have had in my head for years.
ReplyDeleteWe are finally getting around to decorating our living room, so I need accents to style the bookcases!
ReplyDeleteLove what you've done in the guest room! Id buy new bedding for the master bedroom!
ReplyDeleteI could use new bedding too!
ReplyDeleteWe are doing a major remodel of our first floor. I would use the gift card to buy some BHG decor. They have such nice things!
ReplyDeleteI would use the card to update some throw pillows, spring decor, and outdoor accessories. Bring on Spring and Summer!
ReplyDeleteamylouisewolff@hotmail.com
thanks,
Amy
I would spend the giftcard for new bedding for my bedroom too... and paint. I'd love to try what you did.
ReplyDeleteI love that comforter!
ReplyDeleteI'd use the gift card for a makeover in my daughters room. They share a room and it needs some help!
Probably new curtains for our bedroom! We're getting french doors installed soon (!) and need something to make them more privacy-friendly
ReplyDeleteThat bedding is beautiful! I would totally buy that!
ReplyDeleteNew curtain rods for our living room!
ReplyDeleteWe are renovating an old farmhouse and are currently working in the powder room and family room. I would use it toward fluffing those two rooms. A nice hand towel for the bathroom, some storage baskets, a nice throw for the family room, any of those would be nice!
ReplyDeleteI would love to get new bedding as well. I love my BHG quilt but it's a few years old and getting stained too much. Those sheets are awesome and that comforter is adorable!!! Thanks, Nikki Fox
ReplyDeleteSorry my (nikki fox) email is nikki diehl at comcast dot net
DeleteI love this comforter so I would purchase that and new curtains :)
ReplyDeleteI would get some new picture frames for a gallery wall I want to do!
ReplyDeleteThat pintuck comforter is beautiful. I'd be tempted to use the gift card for that exact set, but I really need new porch planters and potting soil and flowers to brighten up my front entry.
ReplyDeleteLOVE this post! I am actually going to be renovating my guest room very soon! We had a spare room set aside for a baby nursery, but after three years of struggling with infertility, we are just moving on. Our guest room is currently in a smaller room in the house, but I'm looking foward to moving it into the bigger, brighter, more spacious room! I'd love this gift card for some accessories or picture frames, etc. just to liven up the room and give it new life!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear that. I've heard so many times that when people stop trying is when it happens. Maybe it's the stress. Keep the faith!
DeleteI am looking for a bed for a guest room so this would help a lot in going towards that. Anu
ReplyDeleteThere's a 99% chance I would use it to buy this exact comforter for our master bedroom in our new house plus some extra pillows and such in navy and gray!
ReplyDeleteOh my GOODNESS, I would definitely choose that bedding! It is beautiful and just what I have been drooling over to use in my bedroom! Love love love.
ReplyDeleteI would love to use it to buy some BHG decor pieces for our master suite remodel!
ReplyDeleteVery beautiful room. We purchased the plug in wax warmer and love it.
ReplyDeleteI would buy this exact bedding - love it!
ReplyDeleteLove the sheets, and we could use a new set!
ReplyDeleteI would get bedding for my girls. They are teenagers now but still stuck with their little girl bedding!
ReplyDeletei would buy ALL THE BHG THINGS!
ReplyDeleteThere are so many options for the $100! My husband and I recently moved to a larger home to use for ministry. There are several bedrooms I'd love to make a little more cozy and welcoming for our guests coming from all around the world. The $100 would definitely go a long way to warming up the rooms with new bedding, pillows, lamps, rugs, and framed art!
ReplyDeleteLove your blog, but I am one of the silent ones ;-) We are moving next week so I can think of a hundred ways to use a $100 - new bedding would be a top choice.
ReplyDeleteI always look forward to your "next" projects! Keep it up!!
What a cozy space you've designed for your guests!! Our girls (now 12 & 15 years old) share a room & are in desperate need of new bedding ... I would spend the gift card on updated BHG bedding. Thank you! tamarfisher (at) sbcglobal (dot) net
ReplyDeleteI just bought a BHG weathered frame yesterday! Love that line. Your gues room is looking very pretty. I have to stay away from light colored comforters as my hubby doesn't always wipe our small dogs paws when they are wet/dirty, and he also puts the wheeled suitcases on the bed! Grrrr! I, too, am looking to tweak our guest room. I have started at looking at a new comforter set or at least a duvet cover and plan on making a new headboard.
ReplyDeleteSO much to choose from! Bedding for MY guest room, towels and shower curtain for the bathroom, pillows for my sofa????? Would love to have the problem of making this decision!
ReplyDeleteI would also get new bedding for the guest room and maybe curtains and wall art. Love the ombre wall!
ReplyDeleteA master bedroom makeover!!
ReplyDeleteLove the bedding! I have been a silent reader for a long long time. Day seems incomplete if I don't stop by here to see your awesome projects.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway.
I would definitely make a trip to the garden center!
ReplyDeleteI would pick up some of those sheets! Love floral sheets!
ReplyDeletefabric and plants. merk (underscore) doug (at) alliancecom (dot) net
ReplyDeleteI'd buy herbs and veggies for my garden!
ReplyDeleteI would get a Bissell manual carpet sweeper. I remember having one around when I was little the way my kids (4 and 2) spill food on the floor, it would be nice to have a manual option, instead of powering up a vacuum all the time! It's the little things.
ReplyDeleteArt and decorations for around the house.
ReplyDeleteI so need new guest bedding also!
ReplyDeleteI love the green paint. Could you tell me the names of the bottom two colors. Love the bedding.
ReplyDeleteI have been wanting that exact bedding for my guest room as well! I would surely spend the $100 dollars on that!
ReplyDeleteI love to have that bedding for my guest room. Thanks for the giveaway--my fingers are crossed!
ReplyDeleteTerilybb@aol.com
the bedding!
ReplyDeleteLove the comforter! I may already have it in my cart... ;)
ReplyDeleteI love the BHG line at Walmart. Almost everything I really like is theirs. I would probably buy one of their Quattro foil mirrors to paint for my older 2 girls' room, and maybe a chinoiserie lamp I saw online.
ReplyDeleteLOOOOVE the comforter. I'd buy one!!
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I just moved into our second house and we are determined to make a guest room instead of a catch all room this time around so I would use the gift card to buy the finishing touches we need for our guest room.
ReplyDeleteLove that comforter! I am working on some gallery walls for wedding and engagement pictures...I could definitely buy some awesome frames with $100 :) Thanks for all of your awesome giveaways!! caila2788(at)yahoo(dot)com
ReplyDeleteI'd buy some decorations for our newly finished basement.
ReplyDeleteA duvet cover to keep the cat hair off the down comforter. And some scented wax burners and BH&G storage containers.
ReplyDeleteI would buy the bedding!
ReplyDeleteI would buy bedding and lamps for my son when he moves this summer.
ReplyDeleteSorry! I am "Anonymous"--teamyount at yahoo dot com
ReplyDeleteI would buy new bedding now that I see how cute it all is!
ReplyDeleteKat. booney209 @ yahoo.com
I would spend it in the garden center, to decorate our new deck!
ReplyDeleteI adore the BHG brand at Walmart! Just bought their cube organizers and bins for my kids' room, and I'm obsessed. Such great quality! I would totally buy one of those comforters for our bed. :)
ReplyDeleteI would buy This exact bedding!! And table lamps for our Master bedroom. BTW I love your blog. krcrosson @ yahoo dot com
ReplyDeleteI just went and bought the bedding (LOL!)..so I would spend it getting plants and things in the garden center to help me in my yard!
ReplyDeleteI think I'd spend it on some flowers and other items for our yard! It's that time of year!
ReplyDeleteLove that bedding! I would either buy dining room curtains, or some new items for our master bedroom which could definitely use some love. :-)
ReplyDeleteI'd love some new bedding!
ReplyDeleteYour guest room is beautiful. You are brave using a white bedspread! $100? I'd use it to put curtains on my woefully empty windows! Thanks for doing the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI love the pintuck comforter! I always go back to the same beige comforter my hubby had when we got married 20 years ago...boring and old!
ReplyDeleteLove the comforter! I would spend it on new towels; all of mine are becoming raggedy!
ReplyDeleteI just painted my bedroom a lovely grey after enduring years of grungy flat white paint. I would use the card to get that pintuck comforter in grey!
ReplyDeleteI would run out for the bedding!
ReplyDeleteI'm redoing a totally outdated CA vacation home. I need EVERYTHING!
ReplyDeleteLove that comforter & especially the pretty little wax warmer!
ReplyDeleteI love that bedding! Since the son & grandson have "real" bedrooms - you know...matching bedding, coordinating curtains, etc. - I think it's my turn to have more than the builder beige with leftovers look!
ReplyDeleteAn outdoor rug for my deck - and anything else I can squeeze on that bill!
ReplyDeleteLove that comforter though....hmmmm....
So much to choose from, but I love the comforter!
ReplyDeletepamcrawford57@gmail.com
Love the comforter! I need new lamps though! ;)
ReplyDeleteLove your guest room! I would buy new bedding. Thanks for a chance to win.
ReplyDeleteI'd probably use the card for an outdoor rug. But I do love that comforter.....hmmmmm....
ReplyDeleterdogcabin@aol.com
I would love to finish out my son's jungle room. I just saw some green curtains that would work perfectly, in addition to a small bookcase, a stuffed animal corral and maybe a rug
ReplyDeleteI would buy bedding for my guest room!
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I have been married 8 years this month (tax day 4/15!). Our bedding was a wedding gift and is definitely showing its age. : ( With two young boys to raise, replacing it falls low on the list of priorities. I'd love a pretty fresh look!
ReplyDeleteliabird26@hotmail.com
I would buy new bedding and curtains for the master bedroom.
ReplyDeleteI would love new bedding. We have had our comforter for 12 years! Due to an illness I spend a lot of time in bed and I do feel a makeover is way over due!
ReplyDeleteLove your updated guest room-- darling! I'd spend the money on a mini makeover for my master bedroom.. Thanks for the inspiration and opportunity! Brookelyn.kelley@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteOne of the things I would purchase would be the BH&G full-size wax warmers!
ReplyDeletemydogrubel(at)gmail(dot)com
I would LOVE new bedding but I might put it toward some patio furniture so we can dine Al fresco when it gets warm enough!
ReplyDeleteWow that bed does look sooo inviting! My little boy is ready to be out of his crib so I'd look for some big boy bedding!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I would start by buying that same lantern! LOVE that!
ReplyDeleteI'm in the process of redoing our master bath. The gift add would really come in handy to help with the project. :)
ReplyDeleteThere's a BHG rustic distressed wood lamp that I'd snatch up in a heartbeat - 2, in fact - as bedside lamps, and shades. Sorely needed around here. mccrayka at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteI would buy some new sheets (WHITE) first, and spend the rest on pretties!
ReplyDeleteI am finally updating our spare bedroom, and want to make super inviting for our guests, with some nice bedding and accessories.
ReplyDeleteLove the new bed items but that squares/ombre wall HAS TO GO. Does not work. How about a pale soft blue/gray accent wall to add some color and tie it all together. That way you can do a neutral fabric headboard with nail head trim and have it pop. Love your style you always make me think about ideas. Hope the rain and bad weather in Indy today isn't to bad!
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's that bad! I think it works fine, I'm just ready for an update.
DeleteI'm working on updating our guest room too and would use the $100 to buy some nice, light blocking drapes. Hard to sleep with so much lovely light coming!
ReplyDeleteOh, I would totally get that same bedding!! Love it!
ReplyDeleteIf I won a $100 Walmart gift card, I would buy new BHG decor for our home. Their pieces are classic!
ReplyDeleteI'm in love with your guest room and would use the gift card to update my bathroom. I want to create a whole new "spring theme" with brightly colored towels, a soft white bath rug, the BHG medallion fabric shower curtain, and the BHG medallion bath collection (i.e., waste basket, toothbrush holder, tissue cover, and storage canisters). You've taught me to stretch my dollar!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sarah, for teaching me the courage and boldness to change my mundane house into my haven.
Love, Mimi

I love the BHG stuff...everyone is shocked it came from WalMart! I would definitely spend it on new bedding as we are moving into a new house this summer.
ReplyDeleteI love that comforter! We have a duvet cover right now - it's gorgeous, but it slips and slides all over the place, frustrating my husband to no end. Which is why it is in the top of my closet :(
ReplyDeleteI'd totally buy the bedding, and whatever other pretties I could lay my hands on!
I would love to purchase an outdoor rug I saw at Walmart just today for our new covered porch!
ReplyDeleteI love how that comfortor looks with those sheets!
ReplyDeleteI would use the card on new picture frames to re-do our gallery wall in the staircase :)
Love the comforter! I didn't know that BHG carried it!
ReplyDeleteTo start with, I'd get that comforter set. Exactly what I've been looking for!
ReplyDeleteI'd totally buy the bedding, too. Love it! I have one of those plug in warmers in our bathroom it smells up the whole back of the house. Nummy!
ReplyDeleteI would get matching bedding for my girls' new bunk beds.
ReplyDeleterparkerjohnson@yahoo.com
I would totally use the gift card to get something for myself..not groceries, not necessities, something pretty, for me, like that bedding!!!
ReplyDelete-Amanda Danielson

ReplyDeletepaws(at)vaxxine(dot)com
I would buy new master bedding!
ReplyDeleteI love the bedding but I would probably pick up some cushions to spruce up our patio chairs. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLove the updates! I would love to buy new bedding for my son's room.
ReplyDeleteI love your blog, I always look forward to seeing the updates you make to your home and try to find inspiration for my own!
ReplyDeleteI would use the gift card to purchase some plants for our (literal) blank slate of a back yard and I'd buy some new throw pillows for our living room because our puppy decided she like the taste of our old ones. :)
tara080@gmail.com
we are just moving into our very first house!! i would spend the money on bedding, or towels, or kitchen stuff! i'm so excited to have a place of our own for the first time in our 6 years of marriage!
ReplyDeleteLove the sheets and comfo in there - I think new sheets would be in order at my house, too. Also, I need a new lamp for our spare bedroom. Thanks for a great giveaway!
ReplyDeleteMy guest room needs a redo ( or maybe a "do" since we just moved and haven't done anything) and I love what you have done here, I may do something similar if I win!
ReplyDeleteI would totally get the same exact bedding! Been looking for a comforter exactly like that!
ReplyDeleteMy bedroom needs to be updated. We have a dark comforter and no curtains. The white one you chose would brighten up my room. Curtains would help make the room welcoming. I love your site and feel inspired by your designs!
ReplyDeleteI have been eyeing this soft bedding for awhile at Wal-Mart. My husband and I need a new comforter, since ours is over 13 years old. I would definitely finally buy this bedding I have been wanting for so long!!!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely need a new comforter, so that's how I'd use it! Your room is so pretty, I would love to be a guest in that room!
ReplyDeleteWe just adopted a baby and have another one coming soon as well! So, I need baby room stuff! :) That's what I would use it for.
ReplyDeleteI think I would start with a comforter just like yours!!!! I love it! Selina
ReplyDeleteI would get bedding.
ReplyDeleteI really need a new comforter for our guest bed. I would buy the bedding.
ReplyDeleteOh man, I'm with you! I've been wanting one of those pintuck comforters forever! I would definitely start with one of those!!
ReplyDeleteI would buy new bedding for my son's room and our guest room!
ReplyDeleteI would buy some new drapes for our guest bedroom. We recently had the interiors painted and now the drapes look tacky and cheap. I need something new and fresh in there for guests! (Altho this comforter is calling my name as well! It really is adorable.)
ReplyDeleteWe have had our bedding for 9 yrs! I want an upgrade!
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to change the bedding in my master for a long time, so that's what I would buy with the gift card. Your guest room is looking great!
ReplyDeleteI would either do bedding for my room. Love love the pintuck comforter! yep, that's what i would buy! : )
ReplyDeleteI need new comforters for my room & the guest room. I love the pintuck!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the giveaway. I have been holding out for the similar duvet cover (for whenever we upgrade to a king bed) from another retailer, but the duvet itself costs around $150. I would use the Walmart gift card to get the white pintuck comforter. keshacagle at yahoo dot com
ReplyDeleteLove the fresh look and the white comforter!! I'm a sucker for those pintucks, too! (:
ReplyDeleteI'd have to get new picture frames for my master. I'm finally getting around to decorating in there after taking care of the rest of the house! Have fun on Spring Break!
The room looks great! I would love new bedding for our guest room, too, so that would be one option for the gift card. Thanks so much for a chance to win.
ReplyDeleteThat bedding looks fabulous! I would probably use the gift card for new bedding for our guest room!
ReplyDeleteI would love this bedding for our king size, and I would also want to look at some news lamps/lamp shades!
ReplyDeleteI would probably buy that comforter too! It is gorgeous! :)
ReplyDeleteI've got to have that bedding...I've also admired it for YEARS but didn't want to spend the big bucks.
ReplyDeleteLove the new look! If I won, I'd help Son #1 outfit his new apartment. Gotta love the spontaneity of youth -- the kid pretty much has his bed, dresser, and TV... Furniture? Dishes? Toilet plunger??!!
ReplyDeleteI would use it on new bedding for our guest room! And I think these are the sheets you have - http://www.walmart.com/ip/Better-Homes-and-Gardens-300-Thread-Count-Patterned-Bedding-Sheet-Set/43197296
ReplyDeleteI'd use it on that comforter. Love it.
ReplyDeleteAnne P
I would use it finish my master bedroom that has been sadly put on the back burner while the rest of the house gets done
ReplyDeleteI would use it for that bedspread.... for my guestroom. Lol! We have black furniture with a dark purple comforter that I'm ready to replace. Your guest room looks beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI love the BH&G stuff - all of it. I think what I most need at the moment, though, is to replace my dishes. Loving that bedding, though.
ReplyDeleteJust finished redoing bathroom & I have been shopping for accessories so $100 walmart card would come in very handy. Better Homes has the best.
ReplyDeleteThis would be great! I'm working on my bedroom right now.
ReplyDeleteI would use the $100 gift card toward that bedding for our master bedroom and the Better Homes and Gardens Grayson Linen Headboard with Nailheads. Looking forward to updating our master bedroom with a wall treatment like you have in your master, only with navy!
ReplyDeleteI am moving my boys into a shared room, so I would use the giftcard to spruce up their new space!
ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful makeover! It's the smallest things that can make the biggest difference! Its so cozy and welcoming and that cute welcome sign is such an adorable addition! I love it! That ombre wall is genius, that must have taken forever but it looks a lot more "grown up" now with the small changes you made.
ReplyDeleteI love this bedding and would love that one in my bedroom re-do, I just bought a duvet and have been looking for a duvet cover just like that for forever! (all the rest have been to expensive!) It's not to feminine and it would be the perfect touch to my cottage inspired bedroom!
Thanks for sharing!

I'd use the giftcard on the comforter.
ReplyDeleteI'm just about to start a Master bedroom reno so there are bunch of things I could use. But if I won, it would just as likely end up being used on groceries! :)
ReplyDeleteI have 2 guest bedrooms needing an update. The comforter would be great with dark green walls!
ReplyDeleteI love love love the new bedding. I've had my eye on some of their sheets and throw pillows. I would use the gift card for that and new wax scents for Spring and Summer.
ReplyDeleteLove the new bedding but alas my husband HATES the tucks :( I would still use the GC to purchase some of the BHG line decor stuff, especially for outside. We're in the process of reframing our screened porch and I can't wait to have it ready so I can deck it out with lanterns and cushions and plants and all the beautiful things :)
ReplyDeleteLoove the white pintuck comforter, and such a great price! Would purchase that, along with lanterns and pillows for outside!
ReplyDeleteI volunteer with an organization called JIT-Just In Time for Foster Youth here in San Diego-and I'd use the giftcard to buy that pintuck set for two young ladies to call their own!
ReplyDeleteI would love to buy some new sheets!
ReplyDeleteI would buy some colorful accents (like throw pillows) to brighten up my living room!
ReplyDeleteI want that same bedding!
ReplyDeleteLooks Awesome!!! I would buy a couple of rugs to keep this PA mud out of my house :)
ReplyDeleteI would purchase that same comforter!! I need one for summer and LOVE that one!
ReplyDeleteI would purchase a new dining room rug, as I was to lighten up the dining room and the current rug is maroon and green. Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this! It's so nice to read about affordable choices for updating a space. I will buy some frames for a gallery wall if I win!
