Living debt free

This time of year I’m especially…incredibly grateful that we are one of the weird ones. Well, I’m always weird but weird meaning debt free. :)
If you’ve read along with me for awhile you know our story – we were $125,000 in debt. It was a combination of everything – I took out a ton of credit to get through college and had a pretty decent student loan bill at the end of the four years (even though I had grants for almost half of my education!). We financed absolutely everything as adults too – TVs, cars, trips, furniture, a hot tub…all of it. We did what “everyone” does.
What’s funny is it never crossed our minds to save for those items. We wanted it…so we got it. We now know the meaning of delayed gratification. Sometimes it sucks. But three months later, six months later, two years later when we still would have been paying it off, then it does not suck. ;)
It’s been almost four years since we got rid of that massive monkey on our back (all but the house and we are chipping away at that) and it is now just our nature to use cash. To save. To be patient. To be deliberate with our money. That is huge.
It’s hard to explain the freedom that comes with not having debt – it just becomes normal so it’s hard to put into words all this time later. We now live like no one else and some think that term means living extravagantly. That’s not the case. Living like no one else means you get to do things you weren’t able to do before, yes. But more than that it’s living with a peace that we didn’t have before.
Deep in my soul I am thrifty. Most every time I will do something myself before I have anyone else do it if I’m able. I will always wait for a sale, use coupons, and try to find the least expensive way to do things (well). My car is now nine years old and I still love it. My husband’s car was 11 years old and this year we were able to buy him a new-to-us car. I’m not a big bucket list person but that was one of those things that I’ve dreamed of doing my whole life – we paid for that car with a check. Amazing!!! I tell you what, it makes me tear up to even write that. Who gets to do that??
And of course we give way more than we did before. I can’t really put that into words either – giving more is easily the best part about being debt free.
It took us years, a lot of sacrifice and a ton of work to get through all of our debt. We used the teachings of Dave Ramsey and they truly changed our lives.
I got to meet him two weeks before we paid off the last bill:
He was the nicest guy and genuinely excited for each one of us that stood there with him.
For us it started when I caught his radio show on a business trip. I think he actually annoyed me a little bit at first. ;) I was all…I have it under control! We don’t have that much debt! We could stop any time we want! And then the more I listened the more I woke up and then dreamed of us doing the same. I told my husband about it and he bought his book – we were hooked.
We worked through the debt for years and it was when we took his Financial Peace class that we really got hard core about it. A few months later we were debt free. The book is wonderful, the CDs are great…but those classes changed our lives.
That’s why I chose to give a few of them away every year. I missed last year so I’m making up for this Christmas. ;)
I’m giving away five Financial Peace classes/packets and the lovely folks at Dave Ramsey are throwing in five as well. I’m thrilled to have developed a relationship with his team over the years and am so grateful that they continue to do this for my readers.
Things you should know – this includes a packet of info (including the book) and you can follow along on your own at home. But I strongly recommend making the commitment to the classes. They meet once a week for nine weeks. Our church offered free childcare during the class so that was a huge help.
You will meet others in your situation and will get a lot off your chest – it helps to just be able to talk about it with people. You don’t have to share any details at all – but the group setting helps immensely.
This giveaway is now closed, thank you so much for entering!
This is a feeling I want for everyone that feels completely overwhelmed by their debt and finances. It is worth it.

Sarah, I LOVE your commitment to a debt free life. My husband and I also did Financial Peace University and have been living debt free for several years now. We now facilitate the class at our church at least once a year. I hope many of your readers will enter to win this prize. It's worth far more than any of your other give aways. Hope you have a wonderful Christmas!
ReplyDeleteLtouchton08@comcast.net. Having a teenage son with Autism and not knowing what the future holds for him getting out of debt would be amazing !
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I are also DEBT FREE. He retired from the military in 2012 and was determined to be debt free before that. He took the class on base and I read the books and watched/listened to the cd's. I was a harder sell than he was but now that we are debt free, which includes the house and 3 vehicles, I love the freedom it allows us.
ReplyDeleteFinancial Peace classes are offered at outr church; but my husband and I have not taken advantage of them. Please enter me in the packet winning contest. We have a lot of debt adn in a few months will begin paying off college debt of our son. Yikes!
ReplyDeletemrscristiblackwell@gmail.com
I enjoy hearing your tips and experiences becoming debt free. We are working towards this but could really use the extra help and guidance, especially since hubby got laid off from a job he had for 9 years and planned to retire from, He always had great reviews, a small Christmas bonus and lovely thank you's from the boss, plus a pension. New management came in and we lost all that. Thanks for the chance, and Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteWe've been slowing chipping away at our debt, despite going from two income streams to one. We'd love any help we can get. :) Thanks for offering this!
ReplyDeleteLaurie.coreas@gmail.com. Ready!
ReplyDeleteSarah, I would LOVE to win this! It's my goal to be really and truly debt free -- we almost were two years ago and then we moved and had some health issues, and now we're back to feeling really ready to buckle down and get that debt gone. These classes would be so great!
ReplyDeleteI would LOVE to be able to say I was leading a debt free life, but LIFE has gotten in the way of that! I am getting married next year and after that plan to re group and try this method. Having the book would be wonderful!
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I dream of owning a home to raise our children in, but know we need to kill our debt and have some savings for a down payment. I've listened to Dave on the radio but never truly implemented the system. I would love the packet as our lives and schedules would never allow us to attend a class together. Thank you for this opportunity! Barbi 17 west at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteI truly enjoy listening to Mr. Ramsey's radio program and would love to put his practices into use. My husband will retire within the next ten years and our goal is to go into this next phase of our lives debt free. Thank you for your generosity in sharing this program and Merry Christmas to you and yours! leiahbaird@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteWhat a great giveaway, especially this time of year! I would love to be debt free, thanks for the opportunity! Jenjuntunen@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteI love your story! Between student loans and credit card debt, my fiancé and I would greatly benefit from this! All of our teacher friends have told us about this and how it has changed their lives! After months of researching, I think we're finally ready! What a great way to start off the New Year and our marriage! Thank you so much for the opportunity and chance. Merry Christmas to you and your family! (and a happy, happy belated anniversary, too!) kaitlinhelstrom@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteSo happy to see you doing this! Hope this changes some lives! My husband and I have been working on paying off our debt (mostly my husband's car and student loans) for the last two years. We are halfway done! Can not wait to be able to say we are debt free! Dave Ramsey's book changed our lives! Haven't taken the class, but I'm interested in it. Would you recommend it for someone, even if we are already working on paying off our debt via Dave Ramsey's Total Money Makeover?
ReplyDeleteAwesome! My husband and I were fortunate to take financial peace before we were married (as young twenty-somethings). I think it should be required before being married ;) I'm so thankful for our commitment to save and remand debt-free (we're working paying off the house). You're doing a great service by sharing your story and helping others!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful gift! As a single mom, it would be so wonderful to dig my way out (student loans!) and not have to constantly worry and figure out how to move payments around just to get them all paid AND buy food! :-)
ReplyDelete4healys@att.net
This is such a wonderful and inspiring post. My husband and I have been talking about reducing/eliminating our debt our new years resolution. We haven't dug ourselves in a huge hole, but I really want to learn how to stay on track with financial planning and tips. We are newlyweds who are trying to plan for a family, so these classes would be a wonderful start for us!
ReplyDeleteI love these posts, the ones in which you encourage debt-free living. My husband and I have lived this way our entire lives and with the exception of home mortgages (and we always purchased less home than we were approved for), paid for everything with cash. Now in our sixties we pinch ourselves every day for our financial security and the freedom it allows us.
ReplyDeleteadrienne.c.manning@gmail.com - I would love to start 2015 chipping away at outstanding medical bills and credit card debt!
ReplyDeletejmvincent@currentinc.com - would love to start these steps toward living debt-free!
ReplyDeletemy husband and i live pretty close to debt free, but see money differently. i know this would be a great class to take to help bolster our knowledge and make smart decisions!
ReplyDeleteaimeeoakes@outlook.com - what a great Christmas present to be giving away!
ReplyDeleteAs a single mom I struggle with debt and credit cards (well..and I have a REALLY hard time passing up Ann Taylor) One of my family's goals for 2015 is to STICK to a budget and start getting the credit debt gone. Thanks for this opportunity! And Merry Christmas :)

ReplyDeleteWow, what timing! Last night my husband and I had our yearly budget meeting and I was sad with all the things we need to pay off and all the things we have to put on hold because of it. I would love this! hlg0706@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI love this. Just in the last 6 months we've started saving money. We used to live paycheck to paycheck no matter how large/small the paychecks would be. We simply spent all we made. Now we have a cushion of savings and are excited to start paying off our debt and becoming financially free :) nataliemaria87@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI would love to attend a class with my husband to try and get him on board with this concept.
ReplyDeletemandycandy7118 @ yahoo.com
I first heard of Dave Ramsey from Kelly at View Along the Way and those first months we knocked out our credit card debt and were living debt free for a few months (besides our house) until student loans kicked in. Would love to get even more encouragement and the correct tools to knock out this huge debt.

ReplyDeleteI would love to win the packet. Have been wanting to purchase this myself and get our family on the right path too. hembrookadelman@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteI am not commenting in order to get a packet, just want to let you know this is a great thing you do. Our church is also offering the class starting January 12. I never took the class but I read the book and love all Dave's ideas. My husband and I don't have any debts besides our house, (caveat: we do have a rental property that has mortgage but the rent we get every month pays the mortgage itself) and I still dream one day soon (maybe in 10 years) the house will be paid off. It takes dedication and discipline to save. My husband is a quadraplegia so life doesn't come easy for us, but we both took the opportunity to education ourselves and put ourselves in a better position (we both have a master's degree). To all your readers - you can do this, just need to be committed!

ReplyDeleteMy husband is always "We are fine. We can get out of it." I will say we aren't in *that* deep, but it's a slippery slope and we are cruising the line. I would love a packet.
ReplyDeleteLaswomley@msn.com
My husband was unemployed for 6 months and is now underemployed..would love a packet.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a good reminder around Christmas time. I know I'm probably not the only one who gets the "I wants" this time of year. We are debt free, but I just want to comment because I think it's such an important message!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your testimony...very encouraging. Email address: dstrn8@hotmail.com

I just love Dave's book and I want my parents to take the class so badly. I checked and there is one starting in February in their area so I hope I can win this chance for them! Your testimony is so encouraging. Thank you for giving people this opportunity. sarah_lewis983 at yahoo dot com.
ReplyDeleteI would love to win the packet! My husband and I love Dave Ramsey but have never taken the class. We have some debt and are also starting a new business so we know we need to be better about spending and saving.

ReplyDeletePlease enter me in this giveaway! This is just a wonderful gift for 10 families and very thoughtful! Merry Christmas! kcarnow@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteOur home is paid for. We have no other big debts, but do have a few credit cards running purely to keep a good credit rating (not that we need that!). I don't need the package, but do want to add my own encouragement and say to everyone "you need a roof over your head, and food on the table. You can make clothes last longer than you think; kids don't need lots of new toys when they are babies (or after that, actually); books to read can be bought second hand; and that new iphone? nah! Bartering is king if you can find someone to barter your time with for gardening, decorating, baby sitting, etc. Good luck to all of you in the debt reducing process.
ReplyDeleteSara.a.hanson@gmail.com, thanks for the opportunity!!!

Thanks for the nudge!

ReplyDeleteI have been wanting to take on his lifestyle since I first stumbled upon your blog several years ago. Getting my husband on board has proved difficult. He's the type of person who needs someone else to explain it to him other than his doting wife. ;)
Thank you so much for the opportinuty!!!!
Congrats on your accomplishment! I am ready for that feeling. I feel so weighted down. mikie911@Hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteI'm in awe of your success! What an amazing feeling it must be to be debt free! Please enter me in to the packet giveaway.

What a wonderful and inspirational post. My husband and I are now debt free too. As you, we lived pay to pay and it was a struggle both financially and on our relationship of 35+ years. But now, with the exception of our mortgage (and we are listing our home in the Spring to move into a condo to have a very small mortgage) we are debt free too. It feels so good not to have phone calls other than from our family and friends. To be able to pay cash for purchases and know that we own them outright. To plan our future knowing that we no longer have the 'debt cloud' following us everywhere we go. And best of all, our marriage is better than it's EVER been. No need to put my name in for your draw ... I just wanted to share that it IS possible to be debt free. You just have to want it.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! I can't wait until I've reached being debt free! Please enter me into your contest. Nicole Merz merznm@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteWould love to win! ! So in awe of you ! Tammy Italiangirl5599@hotmail.com

ReplyDeleteI would love to win and be debt free ;) troysgirl@bellsouth.net
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on living debt free! :) You have achieved what I hope to achieve some day. I too had to take out a ridiculous amount of school loans, and find it extremely challenging to pay everything off on a teacher's salary while taking care of both my son and aging mother. I would love to be considered for your kind and generous giveaway. Merry Christmas! :) Julia jl.stvnsn@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteThis would be a perfect Christmas gift for m . How we need it. We get the credit cards paid off and then almost maxed again. We bought a house in may. We are in our 40's so really need to figure it out soon. Merry Christmas and congrats on your success.
ReplyDeleteI would love a packet. This info would be FABulous.Thank goodness we don't have a TON of debt. But debt is debt, and we do have enough. And would like to have NONE (including no mortgage). We will be having an addition to our family next year, and those "additions" cost a lotta money! LOL

Thank-you, Someday I hope to be able to live debt free! thebabcock4@comcast.net
ReplyDeleteI would love to win and learn more about Dave Ramsey's program and be more intentional with our money.
ReplyDeleteWould love to have the tools to learn how to be debt free ~ and to stay that way! Also to teach our 7 children these principles that we didn't learn. Our oldest is newly married and would love to give him the opportunity to be greater with the blessings God has giving them.
ReplyDeleteI would love to be included in the drawing. This is something we want and more importantly -need- to do. Thanks for offering such a great opportunity.

My husband and I are so in need of this... He's a financial manager of a major corporation, however when it comes to our personal finances, it's why pay today what you can pay for tomorrow motto. Please choose me! sgrogan@comcast.net
ReplyDeleteI would love the opportunity to attend this class! ssdowning at yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteI've heard such good things about this program. I'd really like to check it out.
ReplyDeleteI love following your blog and learning about how to live debt free. We became owner's of my family's business in 2009 and never had to struggle for money or to pay bills. When the economy took a toll, we closed the doors in 2012 and have not only has our income gone down drastically, but I've begun going back to school and our debt has accumulated. As parents of 3 active children, I want our lives back... Not a live that is controlled by the stress and frustration of our debt. Thanks for recommending a program that has helped you. I have a feeling today I'll be reading as much as I can about Dave Ramsey and his program and hopefully implementing it into our lives. sarahtalkington1@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing your story! I can't tell you how much hope it gives me. We've been on this journey a couple of years and made a lot of progress the first year. Then we had a series of two really rough financial years: nicu for the new baby, car stolen, tree struck by lightning, car we paid cash for to replace stolen car died--had to buy another beater with cash, 2 surgeries for the baby, and meeting our 10k health insurance deductible for 2 years in a row! We haven't given up and continue to work Dave's plan even though we haven't made any progress on our student loans, we've been able to make it through the last 2 years and pay cash for all of our "curve balls". Which is a total miracle. I would love to attend the classes and get more motivation to continue on this journey until we finally get to Nashville to do our debt free scream. sjmstelter@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI dream of no mortgage! Thanks for the chance! Dux528@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteStudent loan debt is something my husband and I are struggling with STILL in our early 40's. We've learned small things on our own, like having absolutely NO credit cards, and paying cash for items after saving for them. But we are constantly worried about savings for our future because it feels like we use everything we have to live now. What a blessing this class would be!!! Thanks for the opportunity. We are ready to learn =) mlussier77 at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteSarah, this is just another reason why I think you are so great! We have been doing things for years to get out of debt. We just took another couple of huge steps to do it, but we still have so far to go. Every time I have been able to close a credit card account it feels so good. Especially when I close a bunch at a time. Isn't it sad to be able to close a bunch at a time more than once!?
ReplyDeleteThe scariest part, to me, isn't something I would even mention here in public comments because I'm so ashamed of it - but I'm also terrified.
I would love to have the discipline to wait and save for the things we want and to be debt free! kahartman42@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteLiving debt-free would be an awesome way to live. ndjrome@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! We've been doing the Financial Peace system since 1998...yep, l-o-n-g time. We began listening to Dave's show when it was called The Money Game, implemented the envelope system, paid off loans, and got rid of everything but the mortgage. However,, because of our saving and selling off unneeded items, we were able to put down about 40% of the house price. Never could have done that without having done FP. Thanks for sharing and encouraging others with this giveaway. It is lifechanging
ReplyDeleteI'd love to win one of the packets...pjzimm at Hotmail dot com
ReplyDeleteI've heard about the Dave Ramsey's program through my boss. He is in the process of becoming debt free. So I've been interested in this also. I've done a little research but have not gone full force. It's a shame and we all have that monkey on our backs, some are bigger than others. I don't know what happened and why we all needed to have so much stuff in our lives. My family of 5 has had its struggle as others also do. My husband and I lost our jobs, the kids are active in scouts, etc. Life is so hard and sometimes its just hard to breathe! We have been trying to do our best, but I think we could do better and I would love to be able to experience another level of reaching a debt free goal.
ReplyDeleteI wish you and your family a Merry Christmas!

ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you are offering this chance. My husband and I just started trying to get our massive debt paid down/off. I'm happy to report that 1 card is paid off, but we have a very long way to go. It is so stressful to worry about the amount, that we had a tendency to bury our heads in the sand. We are trying to become "weird" and would love the opportunity to use Dave Ramsey's package. Thank you and Merry Christmas. trm69ks@aol.com
ReplyDeletewe would love to be debt free. working toward it but I think these classes would help immensely. lmprxusc@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteOne of my goals for 2015 is to really start working on paying off my debt. I'm newly divorced, and struggling a bit to pay things off, but I know the Dave Ramsey classes/packet would help me so much! Thanks! cinbake@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteI'm slowly chipping away at my debt. It'd be amazing to get my husband on board and get serious about it as a team. The Financial Peace package may be just the ticket to kicking things into high gear next year! Thanks for such an exciting opportunity to win!

Being debt free would be a dream and something I know my husband and I are really working towards but our having a hard time getting there on our own. I know this class would be a huge boost in the right direction! Ntrue1505@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I have an unbelievable amount of debt. House, cars, high student loans, not to mention several credit cards maxed out for no reason. We try to pay off what we can as fast as we can, but I've always considered reading the book and one day taking a class to help us along. My dream is to live debt free!
ReplyDeletelilkianna19 @ gmail.com
We would LOVE to take the class....we would love to get our debt paid off....dougherty@outdrs.net
ReplyDeleteWould love to learn more about this! My husband and I always dream of just paying off our cars and house, but where do you even start? We are already pretty frugal and I just don't see how the numbers add up. I need some inspiration and lessons!
ReplyDeletekristin.seibert1@gmail.com
We would love to be debt free! I have talked to my husband about this many times and even have the book in my Amazon cart just waiting for me...reading this I think I will go ahead and buy it!
ReplyDeleteWorking on my debt is a goal for the new year. sign me up for the drawing.
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I are working on paying off all our debt, any and all help is appreciated during our journey to get debt free! tennesseechick@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI would love to be entered to win this book. I tried to get a Financial Peace seminar at my church and had a hard time getting enough people to sign up.
ReplyDeleteThe part of Dave Ramsey's approach that I like the most is that once he helps you get debt free - he encourages you to donate to your favorite charity or your church.
I hope this message goes thru.
I am Judy at u4blondes at aol.com

Deleteyour story is inspiring.
I would LOVE to go to one of his classes. The hardest thing is when one spouse is on board and the other one isns't I've the "Let's pay things off when you get a bonus" type and my husband is the "Let's buy more toys with the bonus" type. I'd love for us BOTH to go!! lmwilliams422@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI poured over your Debt Free articles earlier this year. It's so wonderful to hear you mention it at a time when we so easily lose sight of our goals - gift buying time. I read TMM earlier this year as well, but I need the kcik in the pants to start DOING! danilynthomas@hotmail.com Hope I win. But thank you none the less.
