Trying out glitter blast spray paint

Earlier this week I took a break and went into TJMaxx for a bit. I found this lovely lady:
I put her on Instagram and mentioned I was going to glitter her up. I got some “Noooooo's” and some “heck yeah’s” and also a “I don’t think she’s a she,” which is true but it’s just to elegant to be a boy. So I’m saying girl. ;)
Anyway, I wasn't going to glitter all of her – just his her antlers. I used the bag to cover the rest of her up and then taped around the antlers:
To make this as quick and easy as possible I used this Krylon spray paint to glitter them:
OK -- I bought this a year or two ago and I don’t I’ve ever used it. These came out a couple years ago and I saw blogger after blogger had issues with this spray paint. I chose to believe that my can was different.
Well, it wasn’t. ;) It was a MESS. It sprayed great for a few seconds, then started sputtering and spraying all on it’s own. Then the glitter wouldn’t come out, just the coating stuff, and it was pretty much a disaster:
That’s actually the good side – the color was horrible, it didn’t cover well and just looked like butt. Not the look I was going for. I think this paint would be good to give something a light, glittery sheen, but I wanted more for this project.
Then it wasn’t drying so I ended up trying to wipe it all off and it was just a science fair. (That’s what we say when something is a disaster. This qualifies.)
So I was on to plan B -- the more time consuming plan. I grabbed my glitter glue and silver glitter and started doing it by hand. I got this glitter tray at Michael’s this past summer and it worked AWESOME:
You can lay items on it to dry and then when done just take that top part off and there’s a hole in the corner so all the excess glitter goes back in the container. It worked great, I just wish it was a little bigger!
So, after about 20 minutes of glittering she ended up with some major bling:
I actually REALLY love how it turned out! She’s beeeeautiful! Yes, it was pretty to start, but I can never leave well enough alone, you know this.
The silver is SO pretty:
Who knows if it will last till next year, but for now she looks lovely:
Have you tried that glitter spray paint? Did you have the same problems I did?
Have you started decorating for Christmas?
She looks so pretty! I love that you just did the antlers!
ReplyDeleteSoooo perfect!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you feel so terrible. And, I love that you shared that it originally looked like butt. But, boy did it turn out beautifully. I've seen many decorating ides already this season, but this may be the first one I actually try. And... you showed me something new with the glitter tray from Michaels. I'm getting one. So glad you shared. Can I tell you how nice you were to be one of the first to comment on my new blog (it's just been out since Sept.)?!! You are one of the nicest people. Feel better.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE glitter spray paint! SHE looks great!!
ReplyDeleteLove it!! I think if it wasn't a she to begin with, it definitely is now after that glitter. Have a happy weekend!
ReplyDeleteI tried the glitter spray paint. Made some crown headbands for my daughter's birthday party. I finally got the hang of the spray paint by the third headband. So the last three looked great, and the first three... well I'm glad the girls were 4 years old. Glad to hear its normal for the glitter spray paint to annoy the users.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!! Love this so much!! And going to have to look for that glitter tray. Hope you feel better soon!
ReplyDeletethe Queen of Glitter - Martha Stewart - suggests giving glittered object a thin coat of shellac. very thin!!! and that will keep the glitter from rubbing off. i am going to look for a glitter tray - i really wish i had it when i made the pledge/glitter ornaments!
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of glittering just the antlers.
ReplyDeleteOh so it wasn't just me with the glitter spray! I used it to cover some old C7 lights and it was all mud pie looking. Thanks I feel better. Your reindeer is fab.
ReplyDeleteSUPER CUTE!
ReplyDelete'It looked like butt' is probably the funniest line I've ready on a blog in a long time. The end result is awesome though. Feel better, we've had this crap for five weeks now.
ReplyDeleteI love her!!!!! Used spry glitter to add sparkle to a pair of ice skates. It worked fine for a light coating, just sparkle not actual color. I painted the skates the color I wanted them and just gave a quick squirt of glitter.
ReplyDeleteVery pretty, now if 'she' just had a diamond necklace :)
ReplyDeleteVicki.
she's FABULOUS!! i can totally picture her as one of those "i'm fabulous" memes... haha!! great choice on just the antlers, it brings the perfect detail to that piece! love it!!
ReplyDeletelook so much better now Sarah. I tried the glitter spray once for my cone glitter trees and they worked fine, the only complain I have was how small the glitters were, i had to do something similar to what you did too!
ReplyDeleteApparently, according to various sources (like Snopes), it's said that Santa's reindeer would actually have to be female, as males lose their antlers around November, while females retain them throughout some of the winter. SO, yes, it's a SHE! ^_^
ReplyDeleteI think she needs a glittery bow or rhinestone necklace to add to the beautiful antlers!
ReplyDeleteShe is beautiful! I hope you feel better soon. Happy Thanksgiving!
ReplyDeleteYep I tried it a couple of years ago, took a few cans back, tried buying new cans and it still was garbage. I'm not going to spend anymore money on the stuff. The one thing I will add is if you didn't finish off that can you might as well throw it away, if you think it was bad before it is even worse once you use it. I guess the glitter dries in the sprayer, just junk! I hope you get well soon!
ReplyDeleteI like the lines of the Reindeer, you could probably use the Krylon Clear spray (if you aren't spray shy after the glitter paint fiasco) on the antlers to seal the glitter. Hope you feel better soon, can't wait to see what else you end up decorating for Christmas.
ReplyDeleteGive her a coat of mod podge and you will be set for years to come!
ReplyDeleteLove her! I just bought a can of the spray paint to do some letters. Uh oh! I love the glitter tray.....but you are right, needs to be soooo much bigger!
ReplyDeleteSarah, this is so beautiful! You got me all exited about the glitter paint - what a bummer that it didn't work. Still turned out great though - might have to invest in a glitter tray. Whenever glitter is in da house it's usually EVERYWHERE in da house. (I even banned glitter items as gifts for my daighter's birthday). ;-)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you only glittered the antlers. Really came out great , by the way boy deer have antlers not girl deer so you nat need to call it a "him". Unless it's a reindeer, then the girls have antlers too! :)
ReplyDeleteI love the deer either way but the glitter sure makes her festive!
ReplyDeleteSo cute. Ongoing to have to go there and get one myself;). Feel better!!
ReplyDeleteIt looks so cute! Love HER! haha
ReplyDeleteI would love it if you could check out my little itty bitty baby home decor blog I just started a couple weeks ago :)

Thank you Sara! I just bought 2 cans of Krylon glitter spray (one gold and one silver) paint that will be going straight back to the store. I do not need headaches from a failed project. I will use the metallic spray paint I already have (also Krylon). I really do like your deer. "she" came out beautifully. Great job!
ReplyDeleteCandy
Heard lots of similar problems with that paint. She/he looks awesome. The world needs more glitter! !!!

ReplyDelete"It looked like butt.". I'm so sorry you feel bad, but that was the funniest post I've read anywhere in a long time! Then, the line about it turning into a Science Fair had me laughing hard out loud, I am SO borrowing that description! Love the project and the glitter!
ReplyDeleteYou're brave, we know that, & it turned out GREAT! Love it. Well done. Chrissy
ReplyDeleteSorry you feel bad...nothing like Indy weather! From tornadoes to snowflakes, well you know, you live here. Indy's weather is kinda like butt too! I want one of those glitter trays. Will be heading out tomorrow to check it out.
ReplyDeleteI have tried glitter spray paint, I thought it was just me cause I tried it on glass but it clumped and ran and was butt ugly. Usually I use glue or modge podge and just glitter.
ReplyDeleteIt worked out after all. I love the glitter.
ReplyDeleteI tried the glitter spray paint and it was disastrous for me as well...ended up wasting most of the can because it wouldn't spray out. :(
ReplyDeleteI will never use Krylon glitter spray paint again. The coverage was awful and it ended up sticking so I had to put it in a box and let it run out. Your dear came out beautiful!!!!
ReplyDeleteLove your glittered antlers! They turned out fantastic. I need to go looking for one of those glitter trays.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear that I am not alone in the Krylon Glitter Blast disasters! My first can went perfectly. Several cans after that, did not go well at all! Krylon needs to go back to the drawing board with this product. http://www.thepauperscastle.com/2011/10/krylon-glitter-blast-heres-my-blast.html
You did an awesomejob looks very pretty with just the antlers glitterfied!
ReplyDeleteLOVE THIS!!!!
ReplyDeleteI just saw this via Pinterest and I don't know why because I follow your blog anyway! LOL This turned out gorgeous! And, I too have had bad experiences with that spray paint. I even have about 4 cans left. I should just throw them away. Mine did the same thing --- started out well then started sputtering and wouldn't stop and didn't spray out much glitter. So when I want to glitter something up, if it needs painted, I spray paint with the ole tried and true regular spray paint, let it dry. Then, I spray some spray adhesive and then glitter away! I usually do the spray adhesive in patches or sides as spray adhesive is REALLY sticky and if you touch it it's hard to get off your fingers.
