Review of the EZ Twist paint stick
May 14, 2013

The folks from HomeRight contacted me a few months ago asking if I wanted to try out one of their EZ twist paint sticks and I was like yeaaaahhhh! I was so excited when they arrived and I got two! One is just a normal paint stick and one is the EZ-Twist, special!:
I needed to get the powder room painted – there is so much other stuff to do but I’m avoiding painting that wood paneling again till I absolutely have to, so this was easy in comparison. I’ve had that blue color up there (I honestly can’t even remember what the name of it is it’s been so long), and then I experimented with the red and I just needed it all covered and DONE.
I went back and forth on colors before deciding I really wanted a nice neutral. The art I’m planning to hang and the accessories will bring in a ton of color, so I wanted a nice, clean backdrop to it all. I had half a can of the Analytical Gray (Sherwin Williams) left so I figured why not use it up!
OK so here’s the thing – it seriously took me longer to get the paint stick out of the plastic packaging than it did to figure out how to use it. ;) It wasn’t hard at all – you just take the little nozzle jobby and clip it on the side of the paint can:
Then you place the stick on it (it’s already assembled when you get it), flip a little switch, then pull back on the stick and watch the paint get sucked in!:
The first time I used it I didn’t suck enough up in there (you want to make sure the stick is mostly full) – but you just place it back on the nozzle and pull again to fill it up more.
I gotta say, I really, really liked this tool. I talk to myself when painting and I may have mentioned a few times “this is so cool!!” to…myself:
A picture of the blogger!! Whuuut!
When I paint I have this weird fear that I will run out – even if it’s a tiny room, I will use as little on the roller as possible. You should not do this by the way. :) I end up pushing too hard to get it out of the roller on the wall, and it ends up killing my shoulders by the time I’m done.
This stick totally took care of it all for me – I just twisted as I went to get more into the roller. I was surprised at how little I had to twist too. And it went on SO stinking smooth. Every time I paint I have to watch for the lines of globby paint along the side of the roller because I push so hard. I didn’t see any while using this.
So it took me no time at all to get the walls done – seriously like ten minutes? I still had to cut in, but I realized pretty quickly that the color wasn’t what I wanted. It was too dark for what I envisioned – this color works great in our big open spaces in the house with lots of natural light, but in here it was a little drab.
So I went back to the paint deck and went with Agreeable Gray (SW) instead. I ended up cutting in first this time:
And then I used the paint stick to paint…again. :)
I LOVE it!!:
It’s a great neutral backdrop for the room. So light and pretty, it’s just perfect. And it still pops plenty against the white wood. (Ignore the paint all over the crown, it all still needs painted and caulked from years ago. Surprised?)
I especially love how it looks against the light blue ceiling. You know how I love those painted ceilings!
I’ll probably only show you one more part of the room before the final reveal – maybe by next week?? (Crossing fingers, toes, everything.) My to do list is getting crossed out slowly but surely – but then I remember all kinds of things I need to add to it too. ;)
Overall I really liked using the paint stick and I will use it again – it made the whole process go much easier and faster. The only part that takes time is cleaning it out – but after doing it once it was much faster the second time.
What a great tool! I am about ready to start painting another bedroom, and I NEED this!
ReplyDeleteJust in time for spring cleaning, and I'm going to be painting the kitchen and bathroom. I could really use this. Thanks for the chance to win it.
ReplyDeleteWe just bought a home 2 months ago and we still need to paint 8000 rooms. This would be so awesome!

ReplyDeleteEz Twists? Yes please :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for your review. I have painted many, many times over the years and I too am an overly pushy painter and it leaves those weird excess paint lines on the ends of the roll from pushing so hard. I have always been a little suspect of these kind of paint-in-the-roller type products but I would like to try it out now that you made it sound so simple!
ReplyDeleteSo cool!! I have a few projects I want to work on this summer & this sure would come in handy!!
ReplyDeletelorikimball1@aim.com

ReplyDeleteI like Agreeable Gray (SW)that you have in your powder room!

ReplyDeletes.wheatgrass[at]gmail{dot}com
We will have been in our house for 19 years in a couple of weeks. It's way past time to repaint . . . I've never considered using anything but the good old roller on a short stick system, but your description of how quick and easy this product made painting has intrigued me.
ReplyDeleteIt's time to paint my laundry room, and would love this.
ReplyDeletebcogmom(at)gmail(dot)com
Deletesometimes new gadgets are just too cool:) would have loved this the other day when i was painting my daughter's ceiling & walls. will definately have to look into this (didn't know about it) to paint the rest of the walls/ceilings that i have lined up this summer.

I have been wanting to try this roller! I am very short under 5' I need to paint , but put it is a challenge for me.
ReplyDeleteI'm short, and I have been putting off painting my house for years now. I hate getting on a ladder, so that's part of it. The other, is I don't have the right tools for the job. Which I usually figure out once I'm on the ladder. I'd love to try this product! Looks flawless when you use it. Hopefully, it will make my project much easier. Fingers crossed, or I'm buying one next week. Thanks for the wonderful info and for the chance to win.

Thanks for this review. I would so much like to have a paint stick. I am a novice at painting and this sounds like even I could do it. Really want to paint my bathroom.
ReplyDeleteOh my! I have never been able to use a roller with good results. This sounds like the answer to a dream!! I'm about to start on a very large (the whole house!) painting project and I just have to have one of these!
ReplyDeleteRegarding my post above, how do you post with your name??? I couldn't figure it out for the world!! It kept telling me I had to have a URL....I don't even know what that is! Silly me! Can anybody help me out here???? Tamarah
ReplyDeleteGreat post. I paint all of the time and have looked at the paint sticks while at the home improvement store. I’ve always wished that I knew someone who had actually used one to see if they worked or were just a big waste of money. Having the paint available to the roller and not fighting a paint tray that could tip over while balancing on a ladder is a really good idea. Not to mention it looks like there is a shield that would keep the paint from splattering on your head when painting the ceiling. I can imagine how fast a wall could be painted without even having to use a ladder because of the long handle that holds the paint.
ReplyDeleteMy vaulted entryway will be painted this summer and I would love to try this stick out as it would be great to load up the roller and paint a large wall area before I had to go down the ladder for more paint.
You touched upon cleaning out the paint stick how easy it was but I would love to see another post on exactly how you cleaned and changed the roller and if you found any special tricks that worked for you since you have cleaned it out more than once. If it takes standard paint rollers or do you have to buy a special brand. I’m sure the supplier would love to see that also!
Thanks again for the information. I love your blog and look forward to seeing all of your creative transformations that you do around the house. It’s the one blog that I read with my coffee each morning.
Dawn 11charmee@gmail.com
Last time I painted I got hemorrhoid s from going up and down the ladder and standing way too long. Too much info I know. Sorry. I could use a paint stick to make the painting go faster, then maybe it won't be a "pain in the booty". :) thanks!
ReplyDeleteTrdobbins"at"consolidated(dot)net.
Yay! We are doing a small addition this summer -- mudroom, laundry, bathroom and I would LOVE to use these when it's time to paint! Thanks for the opportunity!

ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome product! This I WILL get if I get brave enough to paint a room again. I have a very bad back and the last room I painted (our small foyer) took me weeks. The bending over to roll the roller in the pan for more paint didn't help matters at all. This will reduce the bending tremendously!
ReplyDeleteThis would be PERFECT for all the painting on my summer to do list!! kathryntlong at gmail dot com.
ReplyDeleteI have 4 gallons of paint waiting to be used. This would make the job so much more enjoyable. Thank you for the opportunity. My e-mail is ostermillerb@bellsouth.net
ReplyDeleteIt looks fun to use!! I'm working on my bathroom as we speak... but I love yours!!

What an amazing painting tool! Gotta get me one of these! The new paint color looks so pretty and calm. Can't wait to see what kind of accessories you're bringing in.
