Do-It-Herself workshop at Home Depot

Hey all! I am so glad it’s Friday!! We had some ice accumulation here last night and I was hoping for a snow day for the kiddo, but we made due with a delay (and sleeping in). ;) I cannot wait for a weekend of relaxing and puttering around!
Last night I was honored to co-lead the Do-It-Herself workshop at a local Home Depot and let me tell you, I was SO impressed with how they put it together! The set up was just adorable – since this month’s project was Pinterest-inspired, they pulled ideas from there to create some fun vignettes.
This was a DIY workshop, and I will get to that more in a minute, but just loved how cute the set up was so I have to brag on them for that first. They pulled out their stock of outdoor furniture for the audience so it was comfy and colorful:
Brilliant idea!
The sign-in booth was just so cute – everything was made from pallets and wood they had at the store (hellooo Pinterest!!):
Don’t you love the pennants they made from scrapbook paper?
They had super cute bags with goodies for each attendee too:
I don’t know if you can see my apron there, but one of the staff members painted mine just for me and it is SO CUTE. She used colors from my blog and it is precious – I love it.
OK, I know I should be talking about the DIY, but the food table was amazing too:
More pennants, more pallet tables, and I LOVED the idea of lining the barrels with lawn bags and using them for the beverages. Seriously? So fun!
The workshop leader Janice did a great job of sharing the process of tiling a frame around a mirror. They had smaller ones there for people to try out, but this is a great idea for those basic builder mirrors so many of us have hanging in our bathrooms too.
These were my favorites of the night:
I was obsessed with that smaller one with the small tiles – it had such a pretty beachy vibe.
Janice shared a tip she uses for smaller projects like this that I would never have thought to do. She just puts on gloves and then smooshes the grout in between the tiles with her hands. Loved that – it’s messy no matter how you do it but that makes it even easier!
I think my favorite “tool” of the whole project was the tile setting mat – it’s just sticky stuff you put down instead of mortar. Way less mess and so much easier! (I’m Vanna Whiting it here):
I’m planning on using it in the laundry room so I’ll let you know how it works.
The ladies (and some gentleman) got to shop for their own materials as well – they had some beautiful mosaic tiles to pick from:
I found a perfect one for the basement bathroom, now I just need to decide where to put it. :)
It was a fun night and we had a great turn out, especially with the weather we had coming in. Hope everyone got home safe and sound!
Thanks to Janice for leading the workshop and Celeste for her help along the way and beautiful ideas for the set up:
Don’t forget – the workshops are offered every month on the third Thursday and are free to attend. Next month is how to install dimmers – one of my very favorite things to do in our house. It would be great to see how to do it first hand if you haven’t done one yourself. (Go here to find out more.)
It was an honor to work with everyone from Home Depot this month! To celebrate, they are giving me a $100 HD gift card to give away to one of you!
This giveaway is now closed.

Oh, I can think of 100 things to do...but getting molding for the lower half of our dining room walls tops the list.
ReplyDeleteNot even sure where I would start... maybe a closet remodel or a window seat with bookshelves in the loft or an extra wall cabinet with glass doors in my kitchen... so many choices!
ReplyDeleteWish I could have been at your workshop... looks fun!
I have been wanting to build my own sofa table! So I would use it for that! Thanks for the chance! heddomarie at hotmail dot com

ReplyDeleteNew faucet for the kitchen!
ReplyDeleteI would definitely use the gift card towards the decorative barn doors that my hubby is going to make for me! :)
ReplyDeleteOh I would def use to help spruce up my craft room!!
ReplyDeleteI could also think of a million things to do. But I would start by tackling changing out the faucets in the master bath and guest bath!
ReplyDeleteI would put it towards a storm door for our house!
ReplyDeleteI would sure use it for my kitchen reno!
ReplyDeleteI would use it for the new lighting project in my kitchen...removing light "box" and replacing flourescent fixture with 2 hanging pendants.
ReplyDeleteLove your blog! I would love to get some bamboo shades for a big window and also paint my office. Thinking a darker green but I don't want it to be depressing-- so still contemplating!
ReplyDeleteLooks like so much fun! I'll have to find a workshop close to me. I'd love to win this and finish the crown molding in our house! Crossing my fingers!
ReplyDeletecamillejuergens at gmail dot com
So many projects, so little money! I think I would tackle making a credenza for my office. I haven't been able to find anything I like, so I'll just make one!
ReplyDeleteMy kids are moving out early next month. I will have an empty nest :( I am planning on making one of the bedrooms into an office and the card would help soooo much! Love your blog and thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteKim
I have to finish our powder room (and 101 other things). Thanks for the chance.
ReplyDeleteAww, I wish I was closer to have attended! This gift card would be awesome--hubs installed laminate flooring in our basement last year but we still need to add baseboards and molding around the doors. This would help out a bunch!
ReplyDeleteI would use it to buy paint for my girls' rooms and our dining room. They need to get done but it's just never the right time to shell out the cash.
ReplyDeleteI want to paint all of my doors!
ReplyDeleteRebeccainlove at cox dot net
I would use the gift card to purchase a "neutral" color paint for my living room. I've loved my red walls for nearly 13 years but it's time for a change.
ReplyDeleteI'd be hard to pick which project I'd start with! Maybe an end table I found the plans to online, or a sofa table, or maybe painting my son's new "big boy" room I'm planning! Decisions, decisions! Thanks for the chance!
ReplyDeleteLove the workshop idea..wish our local store would hold one! I would tackle my kids bathroom..needs new everything!
ReplyDeleteOh man where would I start!? Since we rent, it would have to be something that I could take with me. I love the idea of tiling a mirror though!
ReplyDeletePS HOW have I not heard about these DIH workshops?! I'd love to go to one!
We are in the midst of a makeover of our master bedroom...a new closet organizer in our reach in 6' closet would be awesome! Thanks and now I must go buy some tiles and mirror...
ReplyDeleteMy poor poor bathroom mirror could use some of those tiles to beautify it. My bathroom is a mauve/maroon faux marble 80's nightmare. :) I would put the card to good use!
ReplyDeleteThese mirrors are so cute! I would love a $100 HD card so that I can spruce up my kitchen!
ReplyDeleteOh- now you've got me thinking. Maybe I could do this tile project in the kid's bath... It might be perfect!
ReplyDeleteI have a fabric covered bench seat that I want to rehab and I need a staple gun, paint, some wood to repair some of it and a drop sheet to re-upholster the seat. That $100 would be great!!
ReplyDeleteWith a $100 Home Depot card I would purchase paint for my bedroom and finally after 5 years paint over my multi colored walls. Years ago I was in the process of deciding what color I wanted to paint our walls and slapped 2 different colors on them on top of the existing color. Then I had back to back pregnancies and priorities changed and 5 years later I still have 3 colors on my walls. It's not very relaxing to be in my bedroom. I enjoy following you on Facebook and thank you for the chance to win this card.
ReplyDeleteMy email is brandee_eagles at hotmail dot com
I'd use the gift card to fix up a nursery for our first wee one! I'm in need of paint, some trim, curtain hardware and organizational items!
ReplyDeleteIf I will win the $100 home depot gift card I will do the tile mosaic on our bathroom mirror, paint one wall of the kitchen with chalk paint! yey!
ReplyDeleteI would use the gift card to build shelves or some kind of storage in my tiny, no linen closet bathroom.
ReplyDeleteOn the very top of my to-do list is retiling our master bathroom using groutable peel and stick tiles.
ReplyDeleteI would get supplies to repaint our baseboards. The contractor thinned the paint too much, and it's chipping off everywhere. So frustrating!

ReplyDelete"Stainless" Tile backsplash!!
ReplyDeleteWhitneyrs at gmail dot com
I've been itching for some bamboo blinds and home depot carries some great ones that are the perfect size!
ReplyDeleteWhat wouldn't I do with a HD giftcard?! Top of my list is new kitchen flooring. Right now it's carpet. Seriously, who ever thought it was a good idea to put carpet in the kitchen?! :)
ReplyDeleteWe are renting, but in the process of buying so this gift card would help a ton!
ReplyDeleteJen,
japfeifer13 at gmail dot com
Oh my oh my. I would use it to build a "built in" shelving unit in our second bedroom. Its a "girl friday" kind of room that right now is used for:
ReplyDelete-guest bedroom
-storage room
-music room
-salon (my hair cutting chair is in there)
and in the near future we are planning on having it be a nursery.
I NEED MORE ROOM!!!! xoxo

I would use the giftcard to finish work on our kitchen! We are about to start painting the cabinets! thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI am going to try my hand at growing tomatoes this year, so I would love to win the gift card to get everything I'll need to get started!
ReplyDeleteI need to accessorize my freshly painted powder room. I want to install some shelves which will need accessorized and hang some art.
ReplyDelete100s of projects at my house. Love me some Home Depot.
ReplyDeleteLooks like an awesome workshop!
ReplyDeleteWe really need to tile a backsplash in our kitchen to bring the cabinets and counters together!
I would use the gift card to go towards the purchase of bathroom vent fans. I know it sounds lame, but we've been needing these for 2 years and just been so focused on debt reduction we haven't gotten to that project.
ReplyDeleteKinda boring, but we'd probably buy the rest of the paint we need to paint our living room and office! :o)
ReplyDeleteI want to paint my kitchen AND the cabinets... thsi gift card would go A LONG way!
ReplyDeleteOh, my...we have a built-in that needs painting, a light on the stairs that needs replacing, painting all the downstairs doors, replacing the light fixture in the hallway, re-tiling the powder room...What? You only said $100? I thought you said $1000! I am waaayyyyy over budget, as usual. But I would certainly put that card to good use! "Luuuuuurrrvvvee" your blog! ;-)
ReplyDeleteI've been dying to DIY a storage bench in the playroom... I also need to replace the front porch light - I just learned how to replace light fixtures this week, and did the one in our kitchen!!!! pattysprettythings AT sbcglobal DOT net
ReplyDeleteI would use it toward the purchase of new base boards to complete the look of our new floors we just installed! :)
ReplyDeleteI would use it on new items for my new house!!
ReplyDeleteI'd LOVE this for our new baby's nursery!! :)
ReplyDeleteDefinitely my powder room. The faux finishing on the wall needs to go!
ReplyDeleteI would use it to buy plants for my balcony garden!
ReplyDeleteI'm a renter so no major projects (unfortunately). Love your blog!
I have 2 bedrooms to paint, along with a bathroom to strip and pain!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance to win!! I would pick out a paint for the living room and get that painted finally. Then I would pick out trim for the tops of the living room and my bedroom. :)
ReplyDeletewe're moving into a brand new house soon, so my project list is ridiculous! refinishing my dining table is one of them... and supplies always comes from home depot! thanks for the giveaway!!
ReplyDeleteOh, I have so many projects in mind lol But I'd probably work on my kitchen, if I won.
ReplyDeleteI would start with the mirror in my house with that $50 gift card! Both of my bathroom mirrors have the "fake" frame and I'd love to tile them!
ReplyDeleteWe just moved into a house, so we have tons that we need to do. First and for most we need to repaint the whole house. I hate all the marks the previous owners left everywhere!
ReplyDeleteI would LOVE a gift card to my favorite store (not an exaggeration!)
ReplyDeletei want to do some crown molding in my master bedroom with it!
I would use this money to buy lights to put under my kitchen cabinets for dem lighting!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the Giveaway!!

I have loved the do it herself workshops that I have managed to attend. I need to add them to my calendar so I remember to attend. I think I would put the gift card to use on molding in my house. I have some baseboard molding and crown in various rooms I would like to tackle. Thanks for the opportunity to win!.
ReplyDeleteI would love to put up some molding in the foyer.
ReplyDeleteOur front screen door really needs to be replaced!
ReplyDelete~Sarah
would love to finish up my railing less (yes , you read that right!) deck this spring with this gift card.
ReplyDeleteThis gift card would come in SOOOOOO handy right now. Daughter's wedding is coming up in April and both my bathrooms are getting make overs.... already got new sink, vanity, conection kit for bathroom but need to do some tile work so that's where this $100 would go! Please, pick me oh DIY gods.... Thanks for the chance!
ReplyDeleteI would get tile to put beneath our front and back doors. For some reason, the builder ran the carpet right up to both doors, and it gets NASTY! We are working on paying off medical debt right now, so we can't afford to replace all the carpet yet, but we will someday! I love the tile you used in the laundry room. We might eventually tile our bathroom floors with that. Love your blog! catchincurlz {at} aol {dot} com
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping to redo my kitchen soon!
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping to redo my kitchen soon!
ReplyDeleteI'm up for a mirror project too - or an outdoor rug : )
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Deb
I know exactly what I would do, which is paint my front door, add a kickplate and cover the big window in it!
ReplyDeleteOur family is moving this summer - so I don't even know what our projects at the new house will be yet - but I'm sure there will be many DIY projects to make good use of that wonderful Home Depot gift card. :)
ReplyDeleteWowza, great giveaway! I wish you could be around for some of the HD Workshops in my area!
ReplyDeleteThis gift card would be amazing to win; we still have a planking project ahead of us. Planking the fireplace wall (and possibly tile the hearth) would be really well subsidized with such a gift card! Love your blog, Sarah!
And, I am living in the US (the server stands in Germany though), and my email is puppe at verizon dot com
I'd use the gift card for much-needed landscaping!
ReplyDeleteOh Wow! I think that is so cool they did that for everyone! What a great set up. I gotta check out our Home Depot to see if they have anything like that going on. How fun!
ReplyDeleteAnd my kitchen, well yea. My kitchen.
I started on it 7, yes SEVEN years ago, and did not finish. Yes, I am very ashamed. ha!
Definitely our kitchen--it is not bad but needs updating...
ReplyDeleteI have a list of 23 (gadzillion) things I would do, but priority is painting the curtains I've already taped off in a chevron pattern or painting the baby's room since those are more time sensitive projects.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
What a fun event!
ReplyDeleteI would definitely use the gift card towards a Kreg Jig. Its been on the wish list for a year and a half now and I would love to get one to use to build a new coffee table and some nightstands. And a desk for my husband.
Thanks for another great giveaway!
maehayes(at)yahoo(dot)com
I need to install a backsplash in my kitchen, the tile sticky mats look perfect!!!!
ReplyDeleteoh wow, this is so fun. Might have to try it for my bathroom mirrors! Currently in the middle of a living room/dining room/kitchen overhaul, so would use the giftcard toward that!
ReplyDeleteBesides the backsplash I also need. To paint my porch . Wow what a job, lol.
ReplyDeleteWe have baby on the way (our first) and I have a baby gate pinned for the hubby to make. We're also restoring a vintage dresser that we are using as her changing table and my old rocking chair I had as a child. Thanks for the giveaway! mfrapp_83 {at} yahoo {dot} com
ReplyDeleteI really need to paint my bedroom!
ReplyDeleteLet's see... tile for the basement, kitchen backsplash, new lighting here and there... oh and about a million other things too!
ReplyDeleteI would finish up my laundry room redo with some cabinets for storage & a shelf over the washer & dryer to fold clothes!
ReplyDeleteI have about a million projects waiting in the wings. I would probably use it towards upstairs flooring - our carpet is yucky! I didn't know the workshops were free - learn something new everyday I tell ya! I'm gonna go to one :)
ReplyDeletechristenandsteveATsbcglobalDOTnet
I would use the gift card to buy paint for my master bedroom and finally paint it!

ReplyDeleteI wanted to attend this workshop so bad I had it written on my calender & highlighted but...things got hectic around here & I missed it :( such is my life I guess. But still going to try my hand at it. I am a mirror fanatic too! If I won the gift card I am dying to try to make a replica plant stand I have that is falling apart made from wood & looks (or maybe it is since it's falling apart) antique.
ReplyDeleteWe moved less than a year ago and I have a whole list of upgrades that I want to get done this summer when I am home from school!
ReplyDeletebeckyboo25ATrocketmailDOTcom

ReplyDeletelisacarlene0 at yahoo dot com
My closet would love to be reorganized!
ReplyDeletenicol_rodriguez79 at yahoo dot com
Would love to do the kitchen back splash!
ReplyDeleteI would paint! We rent an older home and the owners didn't paint before we moved in. We didn't have much of a choice b/c it was the cheapest/nicest place we could find that would accept pets so we snatched it up without thinking. Now a few months into looking at the scratched up stairwell and walls has finally gotten to me. I could really use this!
ReplyDeleteI could really use a home depot gift card as we are moving into a new house soon! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI would use the gift card to finally buy paint to add some color to our boring builder white walls. I'm going to home depot today to ask about the workshops. There is one SO close to my house!
ReplyDeleteThis would be great!! I am looking to paint and create my craft room, but I have also been eyeing their new patio furniture that just came out!
ReplyDeleteI love your furniture :)

I desperately need some help finishing up a kitchen remodel.
ReplyDeleteI would love to win a $100 gift card! We're about to update our half bathroom downstairs and this would go toward a new sink and light fixture!
ReplyDeleteWe have a million home projects to do. I would probably spend it on paint though. We have been in our house 2.5 years and we still have rooms that need painting. My husband had also been working on painting all out trim white, so that requires a lot of paint too.
ReplyDeletesheridack (at) gmail (dot) com
We need to put a backsplash up in our kitchen so I would LOVE to use it for that... but we're probably doing it this weekend. So the next project will either be our laundry room or bedroom... so I could use paint and organization things! Thanks for the chance!
ReplyDeletesarah8914 at gmail dot com
Just purchased a home and there are so many projects. I would probably put the $100 towards new roman shades for the family room.
ReplyDeletealliemurphy at yahoo.com

ReplyDeleteI wanted to attend the workshop, but when I looked for it at my local Home Depot, I don't think it was available.
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome idea from Home Depot! If I won the gift card, I'd use it to update our powder room, which still has 1980s wallpaper and hunter green cornice board. Yikes!

ReplyDeleteSheesh! We have so many projects we could tackle around here. I think I'd use it to replace the builder grade brass ceiling lights in our house. We seem to have a plethora and they've really begin to annoy me. They're so bad, not even spray paint would help them. Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI wish I could have got on my private plane and flown from Wisconsin to be there but I don't have a private plane:) With this gift card I would re-do my laundry room (beat up and cheap) floor.
ReplyDeleteChristine

Oh, I'll definitely have to check it out. (And I probably keep the Home Depot near me in business just by my paint purchasing alone.)
ReplyDeleteBoy I sure could use a $100 gift card from Home Depot. I could think of a bazillion projects I could use it for. Paint for the living room and dining room or new bamboo or roman shades for those rooms. Could use some new lamps shades too. Hope I win! Thanks for the chance to enter.
ReplyDeleteWe are currently trying to finish our basement- working on installing shelves, finishing the flooring and putting the walls up, so this is what a gift card would go towards. Thank you.

ReplyDeleteI would looove tp win! I have about a million projects, but I liked the look of that tile, so maybe I’d move my kitchen backsplash to the top of the list!
ReplyDeleteI REALLY want to install programmable thermostats in our home.
ReplyDeleteOur bathrooms need to be painted so bad with an eggshell paint and not the awful flat builders' paint! That giftcard would definitely be the motivation to do that!

ReplyDeletePaint/goodies for a new study desk/nook! :) akeith017 at aol dot com
ReplyDeleteHome Depot has the cabinet hardware I want to beautify my dressers and bedside tables in my bedroom. Problem is I need 36 of them which comes out to just under $100. I'm focusing on our bedroom this year since both of our girls' rooms are done and it would help me get it one more step closer to completion. Then again $100 at home depot would be great to use toward paint. We only use the paint from Home Depot.

We have a major deck project coming up that will need this extra money from HD.
ReplyDeletebuild some $10 ledges and paint :)
ReplyDeleteThat gift card would be helpful for SO many projects! We are currently renovating our 'laundry room' (previously a room with a washer, dryer & one wire shelf). After that is our office/library...currently filled with 'leftover' furniture to set the computer, printer, etc. on...SO not pretty. Then there's the sunroom...the list goes on!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I love the little mirror in the front. Must find that tile and try it myself. ;)
ReplyDeleteI am planning on attending the light dimmer do-it-herself workshop. Looking forward to it. I think it I would use the gift card for my boys' bathroom. In desperate need of tile to replace the torn linoleum. Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteI'd put it toward a good cordless drill. I have an ancient corded one, but I'd love one I can put to use anywhere! :)

ReplyDeleteI have quite the list I would use the card for but first I need a new kitchen faucet!
ReplyDeleteThanks
Susan
I would buy tile and supplies for my kitchen backsplash!
ReplyDeleteI have a back yard that needs a lot of attention this year and $100 would be a great start! I am thinking of sod and raised garden beds, plants around our pond and new deck furniture...
ReplyDeleteOoo pick me pick me! I can think of a bunch of things to do, but I love the idea of using the small glass tiles on the giant builder mirror in the girls bathroom. It's so...plain and dull, a tile border would really spice it up.
ReplyDeleteI would change the light fixture in my bathroom:)
ReplyDeleteI could sure use it to get started on a back deck!!
ReplyDeleteI would use it to start a bathroom remodel.
ReplyDeleteThat card would be so great to help us work on finishing the kitchen by finally getting some pantry doors on the pantry. Thanks!

We just bought our first home in November, so I can think of many things I could us it on BUT the two that would be a toss up would be either a matching, towel rod, hand towel ring set (husband currently hangs his towel over the shower doors. I hate that) OR a garage door opener, so I can finally park the car in the garage. :)

I want to add crown molding to our dining room, living room and foyer. That gift card would certainly help with that much-desired project!
ReplyDeleteI have been dreaming of painting my kitchen cabinets! This giveaway would help my dream come true! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI want to add trim around our bathroom mirrors and replace the towel rods with hooks to make it easier for my kiddos to take care of their towels... then maybe paint my laundry room! oddmoose33(at)hotmail(dot)com
