I’m excited to share our deck space decorated for fall!
It started when we decided to do the patio – we knew it was time to restain the deck and get that under control as well. It was looking OH so sad – when we had the deck built six years ago, we made the BIG mistake of staining it immediately after it was built.
Pressure treated wood shouldn’t be stained right away. Which would have been AWESOME to know. ;)
Live and learn. So after all that time, and because we stained before we should have (you should wait at least a few months to stain – now we know), it was in bad shape.
To make a very long story short – we were going to clean, prep and stain the entire thing over again ourselves. That was all fine and dandy until after about five hours of cleaning the railings and wanting to poke my eyes out. And I wasn’t even half way done.
That’s when we realized we had to decide where to dedicate our time – and we decided to hire out. I could have cried I was so happy! Did I mention 800 square feet – and that does not include the railings?
Happy dance.
The stain the company used isn’t what I wanted – at all. I wanted our deep red deck again, but that’s not how it turned out. But after all the hassle and time, I was just thrilled to have the furniture back on the deck and out of our yard:
It’s not at all what I envisioned but now I SO DO NOT CARE. :) It’s done and I’m happy. It is growing on me – I’m good. I’m especially good that we didn’t have to spend another 15 hours doing it ourselves.

Gah…I’m so obsessed with this stuff! I found them at a local nursery (for $7 each)and they are as big as my head! BIGGER. I love these things. And the mums were on clearance at Lowe’s for a buck each – not sure why but I’m not complaining. :)
I don’t show the beast on our deck very often, but we do have a hot tub. It’s not the prettiest thing, but it is pretty darn awesome. We haven’t used it much lately, but it’s all clean now and ready for a nice (WARM) dip!
We moved the retractable pergola over the hot tub and it made that part of the deck look a tad better:
We had the hot tub placed down a bit lower than the deck when we put everything in. We would have made it flush, but it has a stereo system (I know! Fancy schmancy! It doesn’t even work anymore.) that we need access to, so we had to leave it up above the deck a bit.
On to the pretty stuff, shall we? ;)
I showed you our new outdoor table set earlier this summer and it’s held up great so far:
I got the plates from Target a couple summers ago, and the placemats at World Market this summer. I LOVE THEM. You’ll see them again soon. ;)
The mason jars are filled with split peas and LED lights – I’m obsessed with those little jobbies!
But the best spot, our very favorite, it rocks our world, we could sleep out there spot, is the other end of the deck. For about four summers now, hubs has wanted a gazebo – and he got his wish this year. ;) We found one for a steal at Sears earlier this summer:
It was on major clearance and now that we have it, I wish we would have done it four years ago. Every time I tell hubby that, he just smiles the “I told you so” smile. He’s always right…why have I not learned by now??
It feels like a ROOM – it’s also a fun new space to decorate:

Love those pillows too – the square ones were all on clearance at Lowes. The rectangle ones are actually placemats from World Market:
I love their placemats – the stripe and floral are both the same placemat, but they have the different designs on each side. It’s like two pillows in one – for $4! (To see how how easy it is to make placemat pillows, go here.)
The furniture was a fab find on Craigslist a couple summers ago. The cushions that came with it fell apart (not because I left them out in the snow…cough…), so I grabbed up the brown cushions at Home Depot on clearance – in JUNE!:
I actually like these better than the old ones – they’re simpler and not so poofy. They are a bit rough though, so that takes some getting used to.
One of my other favorite parts of the deck is the candelabra:

And now you understand why I was giddy at the thought of NOT staining all of that. ;)
I love looking back – here’s a shot the summer we had it installed – just days after we stained it (grrrrrr…):
Now it feels like we have three separate rooms out there, not to mention the patio.
We are THRILLED. :)

The gazebo actually has LED lights in the pillars, which are way cool, but the light is a bit harsh. The garden lights are so much softer and prettier. :)
I got the light strands (I used two) at Target last spring, hoping I could figure out a way to use them. I wound them through the gazebo and they offer SO much light (when we want it):
It honestly feels like your inside (but outside) when they are on, it’s so bright. But it’s a warm bright – you know what I mean?
And I love their fun, whimsical vibe. We sit out there and just kind of sigh and look up and count our lucky stars (or light bulbs). ;)
So there you go – enough pics for ya? It’s been a long time coming, and we are so happy that we’ll get to enjoy some cozy fall days and nights out there. And on hot summer days, it’s much cooler under the gazebo, so we’ll be out there even more next summer.
I hope you enjoyed the little deck tour! We honestly couldn’t be more pleased with it. And the patio – well…it’s the cherry on top!! I will be back soon with that!

Stunning! I would just live outside if I had all that. Our first house was a cottage that was 900 sq ft so I can picture how big this deck is. You are so lucky and I love how you turned it into 3 funtional areas. We just finished putting in a cement patio (at ground level) out to our hot tub. I've been looking for outdoor rugs but can't find any. I love yours. Where did you find them?

I've never known how that works with fabrics on the ground and covering the "living" areas. And then do you take it down and store it over winter? Just curious. . .I would love, love, love to have some outdoor living spaces but never know how I would care for it. . .I think all of this is just so beautiful -- FANTASTIC!

As I read through this I kept thinking, "oh my gosh that's gorgeous I have to comment on that" then "oh wow that's awesome too, need to tell her I love that as well" pretty much over & over again. It's like the most glorious post that lasts forever. I so want to come hang out on your deck now! Haha! I think the things I love the MOSTEST are the candelabra, the table, the rugs, the pergola over the hot tub (pretty!) and uh... the sweet gazebo... so see, pretty much everything. ReplyDeleteThat looks great! We have a huge deck too and I've yet to do a thing with it. There's one decent sized table out there, but it could comfortably hold five more. The task will be expensive, but I know we'll enjoy it so much more if we just go ahead and fix it up!
ReplyDeleteit looks beautiful, the gazebo area seems to be the perfect place to hang out. A few years ago we also purchased one and found out that we needed to bring the cover inside before the snow started to fall. Removing it carefully was difficult, hopefully yours is easy!

Well, Ms. Sarah, you had me at the LED lights in the peas! See how we notice the smallest details? But I have a question? DO YOU NOT HAVE MOSQUITOES WHERE YOU LIVE? Here in Pennsylvania, as soon as it gets slightly dark, I am mosquito pizza! And what you call mongo cabbage, we call ornamental kale. Beautiful job, as always.

ReplyDeleteIt was fun for me to see, bc my patio dining set is very similar, we just got a canopy similar to that this year,[given to us!!] & I did red accents too. (against my friend's advice that I use PB soft sagey greens-I wanted their reds! So I did! I like it, and it was fun & validation!! haha to see yours is red also, and that it looks great.) I've been wanting those garden lights too (was looking at them at Target!) but I don't have an outlet super close..Might just do anyway next year.
Sadly, we had to take the canopy down when the recent hurricane came along the East coast. And it is too much of a pain to put it back up for the remainder of the season. How about you, does all this get put away when the weather changes? (Including the furniture cushions..haha)You must have a lot of storage.
I always appreciate how you tell as much info as possible, kind of heading off the inevitable questions. Very helpful.

Dang! Those pics look straight out of a magazine! We are splurging on upgrading our poorly terraced cement patio to a composite deck that's being done this week actually. Hooray for hiring out! You've given me so many ideas for styling it- I cannot wait now!! If you ever need another job, I'm sure you could start a design consultation or home staging biz and have plenty of clients- you are so talented!!

ReplyDeleteDo you have big summer storms? Whenever I see a beautifully decorated outdoor space I wonder how they deal with storms. When we lived on the East Coast, our canopy fell down at least twice a summer. I'd love to decorate our deck but I wonder if I'll be running out ahead of our daily summer thunderstorm to rescue table centerpieces from blowing over.

ReplyDeleteI will give you hubby a heads up about the gazebo...the cover will last longer if you spray it with water proofing and a UV protector. We neglected to do that and ours (we have the same one) ended up getting lovely holes in it..and then one wind storm it just ripped off. OH...and if that DOES happen...don't scrap the entire gazebo. Go online and do a google search for "gazebo covers". You can order one in the same size as your current one...for 1/4 of the price of a new gazebo...not saying we made that mistake...but I'm just sayin...lol.

This came out really nice. We had a gazebo at our last house that my husband had to talk me into. Turned out, we both loved it. Ours was from Target and with the screens closed-no bugs! If you ever need replacement parts (and you will) try The Patio Store.com or soemthing close to that. Good prices! Enjoy the fall weather on your new deck!

ReplyDeleteGorgeous! Also wondering what stain brand and color... looks like it could be California Redwood perhaps? I love it! How long do you need to wait for pressure treated wood? I have read so many different opinions from 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and a year! Deck was still in good shape after 17 years despite neglect lol we only treated with thompsons after 5 years then when it started to really look gray after 15 years I finally stained it with an opaque color stain - I didn't care for it.
