Dining room Christmas vignette

You may remember last summer when I removed the top of our dining room hutch:
It had bugged me for YEARS, and I was so excited to find a perfectly lovely buffet hiding underneath:
LOVE when that happens. :)
I was so giddy at the thought of having another space to decorate! That is what it’s all about folks.
I ran into Walmart the other night to get a bag of cat food, which was mistake number one – you never, ever, EVER “run into” Walmart for anything. Mistake number two was making a quick swing by the Christmas stuff. Have you seen their ornaments this year?:
Maybe I’m behind – I hear they had them last year? Oh my goodness, they are so pretty! There is an amazing selection! And they’re only a buck each!
It’s a dangerous, dangerous aisle. I’m warning you. When I saw these, I didn’t want to use them on the tree -- I had a different idea in mind. ;) I knew they’d be perfect for our dining room vignette.
I grabbed all of the glass pieces I could find from our basement and around the house – cloches, apothecary jars, whatever. I added some faux snow I’ve used for years, and nestled some of the ornaments in:
Those trees are one of my favorites!
The silver stars are large and intricate:
Love the little church too. I held back from buying one in every. single. color:
I couldn’t pass up the presents:
And the reindeer was a keeper for sure:
It was SO HARD to not spend $50 on $1 ornaments. Seriously – they are too cute!
I held it together, and then I saw these in the next aisle:
And I broke down again. They were a perfect combo of that chocolate brown and beautiful green! They were only $2 each, and I only grabbed a couple. I wanted to grab 45. Or so.
I use mostly red and gold to decorate for the holidays around our house, but I was so taken with that green color for our chocolate dining room! I saw some $2 beads at Target in the exact same color and added them to my Goodwill wine decanter:
Years ago I spray painted some simple twiggy cone trees from Hob Lob and I added a couple to the buffet for some height:
I grabbed a package of $5 green ornaments from Walmart and mixed them with some of the sparkly chocolate ones:
And I big fat LOVE how it turned out!:
Of course, I added some sprigs of greenery here and there, just to give it more fullness. I don’t think it’s physically possible for me to do anything Christmas decor-related without greenery. :)
It’s a combo of green, brown, silver and a little gold, and I LOVE IT:
I was going to just put everything out here and there, but the hives started, and my need for symmetry won out. :) I made it kind of even, but since everything’s not exactly the same, it’s not too matchy-matchy:
Ignore my after-8 p.m.-hair in the reflection. :)
I’ve been using the same spray painted pine cones and jingle bells in this space for six years, so I was so excited to do something a little different:
And all of the little stuff under the glass was well under $20. Not too shabby for a whole new look!
Don’t you just LOVE that green color with the chocolate? Walmart also has the ornaments in a beautiful blue color that would look fantastic with brown as well!
I am getting there with the Christmas decor…I have some fun plans with the Silhouette and I’ll show you that next week! :)
I think it looks fantastic! The brown and green looks so fab together! I love that aisle in Walmart...I live in Canada and we don't have that aisle in our Walmart..darn!
ReplyDeleteI love it! You sure do have an eye for things. =)
ReplyDeleteGreat minds think alike! I did the exact same thing with that little church on my buffet! He needed to be nestled in snow and in a jar! :) I couldn't get over how cute their ornaments were, I went back this morning and bought a ton more! How can you not for $1?
ReplyDeleteLove all your greens and browns, it looks so rich and elegant!
I think that is just gorgeous! But I'm partial because I am in love with green.
ReplyDeleteWOW!!! Just beautiful!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat current, color choices..it looks great all put together.
I have not been down the ornament aisle at Wal-Mart... looks like a trip there tomorrow, is due.
Thanks for the tips....
Some great ideas I might have "borrow"!!! It turned out just gorgeous. I was trying to figure out what to do with the cloche besides the standard balls inside. I like the ornaments in the snow. Beautiful job and the colors are awesome in your dining room!
ReplyDeleteI love! I saw those ornaments and did the same thing! I was going to put them in my apothecary jars too, but I haven't yet. I ran out of space! Looks gorgeous, as always!
ReplyDeleteOH GREAT!!! Now I have to "run into" Wally world tomorrow. I do just love the brown and green. All sparkly.....just love it all under glass too.
ReplyDeleteyep, girl it is lover-ly! makes me want to redo some vignettes of my own! You always bring it and then some!
ReplyDeleteP.S. I love the after 8pm hair! I do the same thing!
It all looks gorgeous! I love the brown and green together!
ReplyDeleteVery beautiful! The colors are perfect with the brown, you're right! And I just love how the glass and sparkles reflect in the mirror, too!
ReplyDeleteI had no idea Wal Mart had such a collection. I am thinking it's better if I stay away at this point. You did a beautiful job. Love the color combination. My favorite are the green trees in the glass. Looks wonderful.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely LOVE what you did with the hutch, and it has gotten my own creative juices flowing! Brilliant!
ReplyDeleteI saw these ornaments at WalMart and stopped and gazed at how pretty they were and so cheap...but, what you have done with them is wonderful! Love, love, love this idea!
ReplyDeleteI was just there this afternoon... you're right, you never "run" there for anything. HA. Walmart laughs at you as you try to get out of there in less than an hour or two. Great job with the vignette, I looove brown and green. and brown and blue. Pretty much every time I see those beautiful brown ornaments I cry inside because I can't figure out how to incorporate them into my holiday decor. Sniffle.
ReplyDeleteI feel ya girl! I have been thru ther about 5 times so far. Did you see the adorable acorns that look like mercury glass???? Too cute!I bought the words and some of the snowflakes. Such a deal! I loved the church too, didn't think about putting it in a cloche.
ReplyDeleteI'm all over your color choice of brown, green and silver. Very gorgeous and classy
ReplyDeleteI was in Wal-Mart tonight eyeing all the sparkly glittery decor!
ReplyDeleteOf course it wasn't just eyeing... walked out of there with some glittery snowflakes myself! I LOVE what you've done! You are super creative and it's quite inspiring!
The brown and green are great! That combo is striking and different.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! This is one of my favorite postings you have ever done!
ReplyDeleteOmg! Ever since the Nate show I have been following you blog & I must say, I am addicted! I seriously check every post! I love your vignette! It looks beautiful! And I love the green & chocolate brown! I have been down that isle a couple of times at walmart & they do have some cute finds! Think I might have to make another trip! :)
ReplyDeleteThat is soo beautiful!! I don't celebrate christmas but I love the decorations. I am actually going to buy those ornaments. I havent been to walmart in few weeks. I know its shocking!
ReplyDeleteSarah, I LOVE what you've done this year! Yes, that green is perfect in your chocolate room, just perfect. and yes, I discovered last year that Walmart had kicked it up a notch. That's where I got those cute lime green polkadot candy ornaments on my green tree. I can't believe how much pretty & cheap stuff that have again this year. I was just like you on that aisle with all the sparkly things. If I didn't already have a zillion ornaments, I would have wanted to buy more too.
ReplyDeleteYour vignette is beautiful!
So, I have three apothecary jars...faux snow...and Wal*Mart is open 24hrs. If it wasn't for me needing to stay home with my daughter....I would have left by now.
ReplyDeleteSee you there tomorrow.
I copied you last year..here I go again.
Thanks, love this!
Bravo, you have shown that it does not have to be expensive to be fabulous!! Love the brown and green combination, it really looks very chic, Christmas Chic!!!
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas, Kathysue
STUNNING Sarah. Absolutely stunning! I just adore how the light plays up the glass! The final look is sooooo amazing!

ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I love the green color :)
ReplyDeleteLove it! And, yes those $1 ornaments are wonderful...I bought a bunch last year for myself and my daughter did for her tree in apartment away at school.
ReplyDeleteIt's really beautiful! I wish they still had those wirey trees at Hobby Lobby, because they are exactly what I've been looking for. Or at least they don't have them at mine, but they really look wonderful on your buffet
ReplyDeleteSo glad I am not the only one that went nuts on the $1 ornament aisle! I will be posting next week what I did with mine! Hope you will hop over to see! Your displays are wonderful!
ReplyDeleteit looks GREAT, Sarah! i was just at WM touching ALL of those dollar ornaments. i decided i needed to get everything laid out at home before i bought too much. lol i am heading back today though as i have a better idea. :) thank you for the inspiration!
ReplyDeletehappy holidays,
amyW.
Ooo--Sarah, that is a fab color combo! Beautiful vignette! You know, I don't hate WM quite so much anymore. Their Better Homes and Gardens line is actually kind of neat. I have to go out to get ice cream for my daughter's bday party sometime today. I just might have to swing by WM's ornament section! :)
ReplyDeleteI know what isle you are talking about. I can spend an hour just on that one isle. Anyway, your decor looks awesome!
ReplyDeleteSuch pretty cloche vignettes. I love what you have done with those walmart ornaments! You have such a beautiful dining room too. It all looks so good!
ReplyDeleteI LOOOVE the colors and all the glass pieces are wonderful! What a great idea! I may steal this NEXT year since I am done this year:) Can't wait to see what all you do! XO, Pinky

ReplyDeleteSarah, it's gorgeous! I love it all!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love the color choices! The twiggy cone/tree you spray painted looks fabulous. I'm also digging the silver star and church. Definitely going to have to check out WalMart's $1 ornaments. Thanks for sharing and the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteIt's absolutely gorgeous! Love the colors.
ReplyDeleteSo YOUR the one who grabbed that sparkly church I wanted! I discovered the same wondrous aisle yesterday and had plans to go back for more after work this morning.
ReplyDeleteNow I'm thinkin' I should race over now since you are publicizing it!
It looks beautiful Sarah.
Nice decor! Love the buffet after you removed the top.
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah,
ReplyDeleteI used the light blue and brown together. I will send you link when I post next week. Your ideas are always fantastic!
Totally loving it! I'm heading over to Walmart today... so I'll be sure to check out the ornament aisle! thanks for the heads up!
ReplyDeleteTO DIE FOR! My front living room is chocolate brown as well, this gave me some awesome ideas! Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteI like that you strayed from typical reds and greens. I appreciate uniqueness! I would have never guessed this to be a Walmart find because it looks so much more expensive! Great work!
ReplyDeleteI've never done a color theme until this year. And I am doing green, dk brown, gold and a little silver!! Was so excited to see these colors in your pics today. It looks beautiful! And really love the buffet without the bulky hutch. Happy Holidays!
ReplyDeleteHow beautiful! Love those spray painted trees!
ReplyDeleteAs much as I HATE, HATE (did I say hate enough) Walmart . . .I LOVE your vignette on your buffet!!
ReplyDeleteThe Colors are spectacular with your wall color . . .yummy dark chocolate. Oh, great now I feel the need for a Hershey bar :)

ReplyDeleteSarah, I LOVE what you've done!! It's GORGEOUS!!! I've boycotted Walmart & haven't been there in a couple of years but I may have to break down & go. $1??? OMG!!! I MUST have one of those little churches!!
ReplyDeleteWow, that is stunning! My favorite is the glittery trees :)
ReplyDeleteI did brown and green too this year! Just love it. So organic and still sparkly and chic - you did a great job!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely beautiful. Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteWOW! Gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteHahahaha fantastic!! I sooooo recogise the after-8-pm hair, the frantic picture taking ( it could be me taking the picture ) and also the frantic buying of ornaments once they are £1,- in my case/ or $1,- !!!!
ReplyDeleteYou've come up with a great on-the spot-Holiday colour-combo - love it..pleased to recognise you , as I follow you on Twitter!!!
I am very excited as I have just been asked to guest-blog for a big blog- with an all-white wreath made of recycled material.
Check it out if you want, the post link is below.
You are one heck of a decorator !!
http://blog.groupon.co.uk/2010/12/02/how-to-make-the-perfect-christmas-wreath/
It looks beautiful! Great job. I haven't been in a Walmart in years, but kudos to them for color coding their ornaments. Very clever!
ReplyDeleteI'm a Target girl myself but I mentioned to dh that I NEED to go to Wal-Mart tomorrow. Wish it could be sooner, I'm afraid there won't be any churches left, love those! Our master bedroom is done in browns, blues and creams, I think it might need a touch of Christmas this year:) Thanks Sarah, as always you make it seem so "do=able".
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I love the combination of the chocolate with the citrus green.
ReplyDeleteI had to comment again - if anyone wants the Churches they need to RUN to Walmart immediately. I'm at work & couldn't go so I sent my mom. None left at her Walmart:(
ReplyDeleteSarah, love those! Your buffet looks beautiful. I just recommended your blog to a friend for some Christmas decorating inspiration. I wanted her to see your ornament wreath from last year, yes, it was that memorable! :)
ReplyDeleteWow loving it all. Since I came across your blog I have been decoration my house like crazy. You are an inspiration. =)

Oh love this! Am definitely incorporating into the Nutcracker "Sweet" Tea Party I am styling for next weekend!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the green and brown. Gorgeous! And nothing makes me happier than a Christmas department that is organized by color! Do you have a Garden Ridge?
ReplyDeleteLOVE LOVE LOVE. Almost enough to make me want to go to W&lmart...almost
ReplyDeleteI'd rather poke myself in the eye than deal with the inevitable chaos that is always Walmart, but anything that looks like Andes mints is a home run in my book. Scrumptious.
ReplyDeleteLove your vignette. Went to Walmart today, ours didn't have the blue nor green ornaments & everything was already picked over. Tonight I shall try K-mart! I'm on the hunt for some snow. Sarah, wondering if you'll post how you decorated your entry way inside your house? Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThat limey green and chocolate brown combo is *killing* me! In a good way. (c: Gorgeous!
ReplyDeletehttp://loveallthingsbrightandbeautiful.blogspot.com
I love it! I saw them- the ornaments- and RAN away , FAST...to the grocery section...but I've already seen it, so I HAVE to go back- especially NOW that you have posted this!! Oh MY...Walmart, I will see you soon...
ReplyDeleteGreat Job TDC!!
I TOO must have symmetry! haha
ReplyDeleteI love those! I have some glass apothecary jars and haven't been able to fill them all, but now I know how! Thanks.
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing and inspiring! I am now on a mission to find fake snow. It is BEAUTIFUL!
ReplyDeleteI love the green and brown together -it is esp pretty in your diningroom .
ReplyDeleteI have been looking for faux snow EVERYWHERE! Can't find it! Love that apothecary jar with the snow and trees- it's gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteSarah, what you did is absolutely beautiful. Love the colors. I've been in love with greens for a couple of years now. Know what you mean about Walmart. They just remodeled ours & it is so nice. The entire garden center is Christmas. Love it!
ReplyDeleteCAS
Gorgeous & beautiful as always! I loooove the ornaments! I wouldn't have been able to resist them either!
ReplyDeleteLoved this idea so much, went out today and bought everything I needed but can not find the faux snow anywhere.
ReplyDeleteIt looks fabulous Sarah! I think a shopping trip is in my near future (like this weekend!). Can you tell me what color and brand paint you used on your dining room walls? I love the rich chocolate color. I want to paint my hall bath that color and paint the cabinets cream and use lots of cream accents with a little green and pink thrown in. My family thinks I'm nuts.
ReplyDeleteLaurie
I adore what you did! I want to copy. Too bad my Wally is closed now, or I'd be over there.
ReplyDeleteA hint for others: If you can't find fake snow, you can use Epsom salts. Cheap and looks similar.
Love it! I'm normally not a Wal-Mart shopper but I think need to go pick up some of those trees. SO pretty!
ReplyDeleteI am in major love with your fantastic decorating style. Everything you decorate looks amazing! You are such an inspiration to me & I luuuurrrvvvve your blog!
ReplyDeleteLOVE this and how the brown ornaments look like chocolate. I need more cloches right now!

ReplyDeleteBeautiful....as always ;0)
ReplyDeleteYou did good girl!
ReplyDeleteSo pretty! I love the vignette and the colors are superb!
ReplyDeleteChocolate brown and that same color of green were my wedding colors...and what I chose to decorate most of my house with. It's a great color combo, and both colors are found in nature. That means you can't go wrong!
ReplyDeleteFunny, you see it as another place to decorate, I see it as another place you have to dust! LOL
ReplyDeleteWhat will you do with the top of your hutch?
Love all your decorating ideas!!
Beautiful, love it! Wal Mart and Dollar Tree are great places for inexpensive Christmas decor.
ReplyDeleteI love love love what you did...I was at my Walmart yesterday and saw those great isles...I couldn't find the snow...will keep on looking. I love your ideas. Very nice!
ReplyDeleteI love it! I bought alot of the same ornaments this year(presents, churches, stars) but stuck with the silver aisle for my dining room tree. Love all the color you used and Im wondering how I missed that first brown ornament you showed. Maybe my local store doesnt carry those. Great job!
ReplyDeleteLove the ideas!! Thanks for helping break my jars out and play with them! The dollar ornaments are the best, some of my favorite ones around the house came from that same isle, lol.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this post and I totally copied your idea, but since I coudln't find any snow I used table salt - just bought a couple of boxes at the supermarket (it it SO cheap and looks fantastic!) Thanks for your wonderful ideas!
ReplyDeleteThis is the best vignette I have ever seen!!! It is absolutely perfect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want this too!!!! I need more glass jars apparently!! UHHH!
ReplyDeleteI have not been in walmart in awhile and I think it is time to revisit the store that sells everything! Yep wal-mart even sells coffins! Dont believe me? Check it http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do?ref=+425084&Find.x=0&ta=1&Find.y=0&search_query=coffin&ic=48_0&refineresult=true&search_constraint=0&prevTerm=coffins
Oh! Thanks for sharing this! I was feeling uninspired because of being low on cash, but now I'm on my way out to WalMart!
ReplyDeleteI got myself some of those twiggy tree things from HobLob too, spray painted them white (3 coats) and then using come craft glue I attached sparkly snow (the stuff you use in your jars) and Instantly I have 3 beautiful Snowy Xmas Trees.
ReplyDeleteI just need some fluffy felt to set them on and to build up the display from here.
AWSOME FUN..... I Steal I mean borrow some of your ideas and run with it.
YOU HAVE MAD TALENT! !!!!!!
I agree, I didn't see these last year either and they were amazing this year. Love the brown and green together and your buffet display is wonderful.

ReplyDeleteGorgeous!!! I love the green and brown combo. It's stunning. It's amazing how putting something like a cheap Walmart ornie under/in glass can make it look like a million bucks!
