Painted "herb" container with stencil

June 23, 2010

For about, forever, I’ve wanted a craft cutter – I have drooled over them in your posts. I have coveted your adorable crafts. I have sighed as I walked by them at the craft store.

And now…the day has come. I have one of my very own. My BFFs at How Does She and Silhouette contacted me and asked if I’d like to try one out – and if I didn’t like it I could send it back.

I looked up the Silhouette online just to see what it was capable of, and got more and more excited with every click. I did the happy dance the day it arrived on our porch. It was soooo pretty:

SILHOUETTE craft cutter

There are SO many crafting possibilities with this one! My favorite by far is the vinyl cutting option.

I have wanted to try the glass etching forever and now. I. can. I love all of the scrapbook tools and papers but have never scrapbooked! But those of you who do would LOVE the Silhouette!

Can you even imagine the fun I’m going to have during the holidays? The pumpkins? The ghosts? The Santas? GIDDY!

My mind was swimming with ideas when mine arrived, but my first completed project was for the kitchen, of course. :)

I took a little crate thingamabob from a recent thrift store shopping trip with my pal Beckie:
Painted decorative herb container

Since I didn’t have any apple green vinyl, I tried it out with some card stock. I had a blast trying out some of the (many!) fonts:
Using craft cutter for stencils

The one I loved was a bit delicate to glue it onto the crate, so I decided to paint the negative space (punched out the letters above and then used the paper as a stencil) instead:

To get a really clean look you’ll want to use vinyl as the stencil, but I actually LOVE how this looked a little imperfect – it was just the look I was going for!

I finished it off with some faux greenery and I luuurve it!:
Herb painted planter stencil
I had planned on putting this up above the cabinets since it’s so full and tall, but it’s so darn cute, I love having it down on the counter too!:
Wood herb crate makeover

Gah. It is adorable!

What I think is the best part about the Silhouette is there is NO need for cartridges – you create your own text and shapes. AND it comes with ton of images you can use, as well as a bunch you can download online.

  150. Oh man. What would I do with the Silhouette? The real question should be what WOULDN'T I do with the Silhouette! I am currently redoing my studio and am looking for something cute for the walls. I can't really find stencils I like so I would probably make stencils for the walls first. Then stencils for my table tops and desk drawers. The I would take it to work for the bulletin boards I make up there. (Its really a hassle to print out things and then cut them by hand for the bulletin boards.) And I too have always wanted to do glass etching (ever since drooling over them doing it in an infomercial.) so I would definitely figure out a way to incorporate etching in my studio or office. I would actually INVENT ways to use the Silhouette just to use it lol.

But I'd totally have to hide this from my brother - he'd want to cut vinyl for his custom vehicle paint jobs. Hmmm...I could rent it to him...oh my gosh I need this thing BAD.
