Turning decorative vinyl into art

Are you a vinyl lover like me? I think the vinyl wording and designs that have been gaining popularity over the past few years are just so FUN to use around the house.
Recently I’ve been wondering if they are here to stay, and then I saw two episodes of Divine Design where Candice Olsen used vinyl on the walls – and I figured I’m good to go for quite a while. I mean, if Candice is using it…I’m safe. ;)
I know you can easily go overboard with the stuff – using a bit of restraint with vinyl on your walls is not a bad thing. But there is such a huge variety of it out there now, it’s so easy to make it work with your decor. And it’s not only words anymore – the vinyl I see now is more like art, for sure!
What I love about vinyl is anyone can use it, in just about any room. Even if you rent, you can put it up, then just peel it off when you move. Or, you can mount it on a piece of wood and move it around as you wish. I’ve been doing that more and more -- if I think I’ll ever want to reuse one somewhere else, I find ways to make it movable.
The giraffe growth chart from Uppercase Living is too cute! I just love it, and I wanted to make sure it could go with us if we ever left this house:
I have a few phrases on our walls that are the perfect finishing touch – I’ve shown you the photo wall on our staircase:
The playroom has a sweet saying I just love:
And the vinyl saying in our laundry room almost makes laundry fun:
OK, I’m totally lying. Nothing makes laundry fun. NOTHING. (By the way, all three of those sayings were from Uppercase Living.)
I got the saying for our black door in the garage from a local signage shop:
It was super cheap and FAST. I am insanely, ridiculously impatient and this one was right up my alley.
OH! I almost forgot the front door! It’s a custom "welcome" I had made: Obviously, this picture is from fall. But I love the porch during that season, so there. you. go.
But my latest vinyl find is one of my favorites. My friend Krista is just as in love with this stuff as I am, and she found an adorable vinyl clock on clearance at Stein Mart ($15 I think?) a couple months ago. I had to go get one.
I could not resist it. I mean, seriously. It has the cutest little animals you ever did see:
Could you just die? Because it was so cute, I wanted to make sure we could keep this one and move it around if needed.
I got a two by two foot board at Lowe’s for $5, and had them cut it down just a bit to 22 by 22 inches. I painted it white, and once it had cured, we started putting the vinyl on:
This one was a bit more involved than most – you have to kind of layer the pieces. But the Bub helped me decide where to place the animals and we had fun doing it. ;)
Then I finished it off by framing it out with some scraps of molding from the garage:
(I didn’t even fill the holes. Don’t tell.)
I adore it!
There is a wall in our loft/hall/playroom that has always called out for something, but the light switch made most items look odd up so high.
For some reason, I think this works perfectly, even up higher than I would normally put it:
Probably because it is so gosh darn cute!! Even hubby thinks it’s totally adorable. :)
So what do you think? Do you have vinyl art in your home? Do you have a favorite?

I love that clock! What a fabulous job! I just added vinyl numbers to my door today! (I even blogged about it if you want to peek) I have been thinking where else I could use vinyl "stuff" - it was so fun!
ReplyDeleteThat is utterly adorable! LOVE it!
ReplyDelete~ Sarah
I too love vinyl...as long as it is not overdone. I have some quotes that I put up around my home. I will go check out all the great vinyl!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Victoria
I'd love for you to check out the lettering on the little glider I did. Lettering on chairs? Uh... YEah. Anywhere you can spell it out, SPELL IT OUT! (P.S. Mine aren't vinyl. Unfortunately I took the time to spell it out.) And one more thing. You rock.
ReplyDeleteI love your post! I also am a vinyl lover. I actually just ordered some and am impatiently waiting for it to arrive! I can't wait to use it and post about it.
ReplyDeleteI love the clock! It is PERFECT in that spot :)
ReplyDeleteHealth and happiness,
Angela

that clock is just about the cutest clock I have ever seen! wow, I think I may have to track one down!
ReplyDeleteThat is so insanely cute!! I just finished a vinyl project that was inspired by your family picture stairway wall. I am posting it on Friday - I will send you a pic!
ReplyDeleteSo cute, love the owl! I liked the laundry room quote there too! Although I don't know if I'll ever feel like it's loads of fun, in my home that would definitely be sarcasm speaking. ;)
ReplyDeleteThe clock is great! I use vinyls sometimes in my design projects, mostly in kids' rooms but I find that when people apply the orange peel texture to walls they don't stick as well. :(
BTW, I have a spring beauty giveaway if you're interested in entering:
http://theclassywoman.blogspot.com/2010/03/spring-giveaway.html
I love the clock. If I lived closer to you, I might be tempted to drive over to your house and try to buy it off of you (but I'm in AZ, so it's a little far). I love vinyl too. Right now I'm in the process of trying to figure out where to put a quote on my bedroom wall. I have it taped up on the wall to see if I like it there before I commit to actually sticking it to the wall. :)
ReplyDeleteLove it! The clock is adorable. I have vinyl lettering on my dresser mirror which reads, "I have found the one whom my soul loves." It's in front of my bed, and I see it every time I go to bed and each morning I get out of bed. It reminds me what a great man I'm blessed with.
ReplyDeleteI Love Love Love vinyl too!! I absolutely hate picking it but in the end it makes anything beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI just LUUURVE your blog! It makes me smile, laugh, and it inspires me. Thanks for quitting your 9-5. You're needed HERE!
ReplyDeleteI am a quote-aholic so I love this vinyl trend (and hopefully not a fleeting one). That clock is adorable and perfect for that spot.
ReplyDeleteLOVE the clock. So cute!
ReplyDeleteI'm dying to try some vinyl in my family room. I have a huge wall that desparately needs something. I just need to decide what saying I want to use.
ReplyDeleteI just did my first vinyl project. You can check it out here: http://cathymarquardt.blogspot.com/2010/03/update-to-mr-fs-roomfinally.html
ReplyDeleteYou have done an excellent job & if I were to visit your home I would notice the Welcome & all of your sweet words throughout your house! Love the clock. Thank you for sharing!
I do have a few and want to do more! I have one in my laundry room, right on the wall. I did one on a wood plaque for the spare bedroom. I'd like to get a family saying one for the spot where I hang our family pictures. I also have two more sitting here waiting to be put up ~ one for the master bedroom wall and one that says "Welcome" that I'm putting on a piece of wood to making something for my front door. So yes, I love them, too!
ReplyDeleteI love the one that says, "YOUR HOME"
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get that one?
I have a vinyl saying over some pictures in my living room. Love it. I also have a saying in my family room that is a rub-on transfer, not vinyl. Not as easy to remove, but it can be painted over. That clock is adorable! Great job!
ReplyDeleteI love vinyl decor too. The clock turned out GREAT!
ReplyDeleteThe clock looks GREAT!! Such cute little animals! LOVE!!
ReplyDeleteI love vinyls! I have some in my powder room (trees) and just ordered house #s for the front door and some beautiful iron scrollwork ones for my living room. Yes, I am a little obsessed. But I love that they are temporary and you can take them down when you want to!
ReplyDeleteI have only used vinyl lettering. After seeing that clock I am going to have to spread my wings a bit. That is so darling.
ReplyDeleteBrooke
That clock is so cute! I love vinyl decals as well and I don't think that they are going anywhere. I plan to do something cute like a tree in a nursery one day....I have a vinyl clock also but haven't put it up yet. I couldn't really decide where it should go but your idea of making them movable may just solve that problem!
ReplyDeleteI love the vinyl art!!! I have always loved the words, but I am so excited to see art in vinyl form! Hopefully my renting days are numbered, but it is encouraging to know there is art I don't have to make holes in the wall for!
ReplyDeleteWe have vinyl letters on our walls that say "Home is where your story begins" and we have our pictures surrounding it. Too cute!
ReplyDeleteI love the vinyl, too! I don't have much in my home only in my laundry room. It's the sweetest little birds I got off etsy. Here's a picture of two of them:
ReplyDeletehttp://mamasews.blogspot.com/2010/03/little-craftiness.html
I really want a custom one for my dining room written in fancy script: "You will eat it and you will like it". We say that all the time to the kids :) I'm not joking, I would love one like that!
that clock is adorable!!
ReplyDeleteI decorated with a different kind of vinyl...vinyl record album sleeves...
http://crib-tales.blogspot.com/2010/01/renew.html
I do like vinyl! I've only used it once so far, but I'd like to do some more with it.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I've seen lots of laundry signs, but yours is still the cutest.
Hey I am new to blog world and I just want to say your blog is beautiful. I just want to let you know that I will be following you. I can't wait to see what else you post.
ReplyDeleteElisabeth
I agree. The clock is adorable. We don't have a lot of vinyl except for the laundry room and a vinyl saying that needs to be placed in the stairwell.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is actually in your house-the "you are home" I'd love to have that for our garage door as well. A reminder to leave all the crap there in the garage and enjoy your home.
That clock is awesome. I may need to make a trip to Stein Mart. I've actually never been in one. I didn't even know they had houseware type items. I'm driving DH a bit crazy with all the vinyl projects I have in mind, but it's fun.
ReplyDeleteI love the You're Home on the door.
ReplyDeleteI think you not filling in the holes just looks like the beaver nibbled on it a little, lol! That clock is too cute!
I too LOVE all the vinyl! We have a Welcome on our front door, Joshua 24:15 in the living room and my girls names on their bedroom doors. I also have the "Always remember to kiss me goodnight" from Uppercase Living that I just need to find the right sign for it to go on.
ReplyDeleteLove vinyl words! I have "To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven." It is in the family room, which is a play room, computer room, sewing room, homework room etc. My 4 children too soon will be grown and gone and I am enjoying this "season" more than words can say. I bought vinyl at Wal-mart and had a friend cut it out with her cri-cut! Less than $20!
ReplyDeleteI have a cricut which cuts vinyl and I am so addicted. I really have to restrain myself from putting too many things up in our house! I started creating vinyl projects for my etsy shop to outlet my love :)

I was looking at vinyl on etsy right before coming to blogger! I love all yours!
ReplyDeleteAwww! I missed the noon deadline to become a Squeezie, whatever that is! But this is my first visit. I found you through the HomeGoods challenge.
ReplyDeleteI love vinyl, too, and just wanted to say that Antonio from the new show the Antonio Treatment used it amazingly on the ceiling of his first show client. i didn't think I would like his show, but I love it. Especially since his second client had a memorial to her dachshund!!
Great site, btw. I'm looking forward to exploring it more....and yes, those floral pictures below were amazing. I wish I had a good camera, too!
My favorite part of that post was part about the brass door knob. You get me laughing EVERY day! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLove the growth chart...but absolutely love, love, love the clock...how stinkin' adorable is that!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your vinyl love!!!
Kelly
I totally love your clock!! it is precious and the way you finished it out... you are truly a genious!
ReplyDeleteway. too. CUTE.
ReplyDeleteO.M.G. That clock is adorable!
ReplyDeleteMajor cuteness!! :) I have one vinyl saying in our new room/playroom area. I'd like to get a few more. I love how versatile they are. :)
ReplyDelete*{Shout out to Uppercase Living!!}*
ReplyDeleteI am a demonstrator and I have to agree... VINYL ROCKS!! I use it all the time! The options for creativeness are endless! You have clearly shown that :)

Thank you SOOO much for the info about Uppercase Living. I LOVE the look of the Vinyl words and have been REALLY wanting to use it in my house, but the limited selection of phrases in my local stores has never convinced me to buy any. I LOVE the selection their website offered and found TONS of sayings I would love to use. Now I just have to keep myself from going overboard. I am SOO inspired. Thanks!! LOVE what you have done in your house!
ReplyDeleteOh, how I love vinyl wall words! I've only got one up, but I could go completely overboard! Now if I could just get the pictures hung the way I want under the wall words!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great love for vinyl as an Uppercase Living demonstrator it's music to my years! LOL So if any of your readers need a supplier please check out my website!

I also love all of your great decorating ideas, keep them coming!!
Thanks,
Elizabeth
I had a few vinyl words from Wallwords in our home in Florida. They were not 'in' yet so I hadn't seen them anywhere. Now they are all over the place. I don't have them in our new home but I love your laundry room saying. Very cute.
ReplyDeleteI love Vinyl, but I have been afraid of it looking cheesy in person, even though it looks terrific in photos.
ReplyDeleteOkay you convinced me...I am now in luv....now if I only had a cricut... ;)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE IT! I have two girls, in their bathroom I have the saying..."Be Yourself Everyone Else Is Taken". I think it will be there for some time, as they grow I hope they will take it to heart, not just as super cute lettering that their mom stuck on the wall. I get all mine from Uppercase Living b/c I have a good pal who is a consultant! : )
ReplyDeleteThat owl just made my day(and it's been a very crappy day) That is the cutest clock I have ever seen! I want that vinyl so bad, and would save it for when I have kids.
ReplyDeleteI love that clock! What a great job. My daughter recent addition of wall play from Wallies is the play house - and an adorable addition to a little girls play area. The vinyl clock is a new idea to me ~ thanks for the tip!
ReplyDeleteThat is adorable! I've seen the quotes used in several homes, but never the kids art. The clock looks great!
ReplyDelete-Arielle
I. Love. That. Clock!!
ReplyDeleteI am going to have to go on a hunt to find it or something LIKE IT!!! EEK! I just love it.
I love the doors!!! I never thought about decorating my door from the garage into the house.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the animal clock...my kiddos would love it too. I'm grieving slightly, as Oregon does not have a Stein Mart...I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for the item elsewhere. Do you know who it's buy...do you know where else might have it?
ReplyDeleteI am hoping that it can grace my wall someday too!
Nice clock!
ReplyDeleteThat is too cute for words!
ReplyDeleteI think it's time for me to be honest......
ReplyDeleteI saw your post where you painted the door black and put the vinyl lettering on. I was hooked. HOOKED I say! Ran out to the store, bought black paint, and ordered me some vinyl lettering of my own.
Did I say I was HOOKED! because I then bought myself a CRICUT!!! Really, what can't you do with vinyl? So a BIG "Thank You" for my new addiction! LOL Carrie
I LOVE these! I love how they are so easy and you don't have to commit.
ReplyDelete-FringeGirl
Umm yes that is the cutest thing I have ever seen. I am totally in love.
ReplyDeleteThat is so cute!!
ReplyDeleteI am completely hooked on vinyls. I use them all the time.

ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, that clock is ridiculously adorable! Love it!
ReplyDeleteLove Home Goods! When I can't locate what I want at a thrift/consignment store, I can usually find it at Home Goods! Saved my tush more than once - like the perfect oil bottles for my kitchen counter and the funky bottle stoppers to go with them!
ReplyDeleteGuerrina in CT
LOL - Good comment - wrong article! That's okay. I have been fascinated by your use of vinyl since I started visiting your site last Fall. Trying to decide what I want to put on my front & back doors AFTER I decide what color to paint them! The clock? I've fallen in love!
ReplyDeleteGuerrina in CT
Very cute. I love the little owl.
ReplyDeleteLove the vinyl....way cute :)
ReplyDeleteI am SO glad I just found your blog today! I am a money saving blogger myself, and although I try to dabble a little in decorating I haven't had much of a budget. I am embarrased to admit I've been on here ALL day, and have no plans to leave just yet! LOL
ReplyDeleteThis clock is ADORABLE! I am so inspired now, thank you so much!!

I've been leary of vinyl, but I think you've made a believer out of me.
ReplyDeleteHi TDC! Love all of these. I'm just at the moment obsessing about some vinyl decals for my front door. I also just wanted to introduce myself. I'm a brand new blogger who was really inspired by YOU to start my site! It's called The Painted Hive and I wanted to say "thank you" for all the subliminal guidance!

I just love that clock!! What a fabulous idea!! :-) I really want to get some vinyl for my home but the walls are in major need of a paint job and I don't want to put vinyl up until I know how I am decorating...in due time I suppose.
