A black garage door

I wanted to show you my favorite part of the garage -- our painted door. Who knew a black door could make a girl so giddy?
I saw a similar project over at Just a Girl a few weeks ago and knew her door must. be. mine.
Well, OK, not her black door -- that would be totally weird.
Copying her black door would have to suffice. I started with a white, blah, builder basic, dented, dirty white door:
I used my free quart of Glidden paint (that I also used on my side-of-the-road table) and my free paint liners:
They work every time. ;) I didn't prime it -- but I do recommend priming if you have one iota of patience (unlike me). I did four coats, at least 12 hours apart. That would have been cut in half if I had used one coat of tinted primer first.
I considered making my own vinyl lettering, but about two seconds into it I realized it wasn't such a good idea. I went to a local signage shop and they had this one for me in a couple hours:
What a great way to make a garage entrance look inviting!
ReplyDeleteIt's GORGEOUS! Love, love, love it!
ReplyDeleteI have been an absentee commenter lately...can't wait to go back and see what you've been up to!
I LOVE it! I'm totally going to paint my garage door black. How elegant! I can't wait to see the whole project! (SO, post it already, will ya?! LOL!)
ReplyDeleteOh I am jealous...I don't even know how far down the list painting my garage door is...there is SO much to do first! Looks great!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE it!! Can't wait to see the completed garage. My garage is currently full of unfinished projects(thanks so much to you .lol!!) I long for a clean space..
ReplyDeleteAhhhh, it looks terrific!! What a change!

Wow! I get sooo excited when I see you've added a new post! Your ideas are so inspiring and always look fantastic! My hubby always knows when my wheels are turning after I've read your blog!!
ReplyDeleteLove the door painted black. Great job. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteFantastic job!!! For some reason, I'm getting into the color black, also (on a select few things... I still love my candy colors, HA!)... it really is a very striking look!
ReplyDeleteChristina :)
I love that idea. Thinking bedroom doors would be good for something like that too. Ummm, thinking, thinking.
ReplyDeleteLooks great!
ReplyDeleteThat turned out great! I especially love the expression!
ReplyDeleteLove your black door! I have been thinking about painting my front door black- I'm wishing I had choses black for my free quart of paint instead of a white!

My hubby painted our front door black and I LOVE it! You just cant go wrong with black! Oh and thanks for the new word..... decrapification...I am so going to use that!
ReplyDeleteOoh, "luuuurve" it (you know...to quote the great TDC :-). I'm so impressed by your many projects. You're on fire. This makes me want to paint my door from the garage to the house now...with a fab grey green-blue and a happy "Welcome Home!" sign. Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteWow, this is fabulous!! Wanna come do mine next?
ReplyDeleteLovely!! :) What a difference. Did you get the Onyx? That's what I got, but I'm not sure what to do with it yet. Love the vinyl letters. :)
ReplyDeleteOh I love that!
ReplyDeleteLove it!!! Makes me want to paint my garage door black too!! Oh wait, I don't have a garage!! :( Oh well!
ReplyDeleteOh, and I didn't notice the letters being off center. Even after you pointed it out. I still don't see it! Does that mean my eyes are off center?
I've been trying to talk my hubby into letting me paint our front door black. He, along with my parents, think I'm crazy. I may do it anyway just to see what they'd do. It desperately needs a new coat of paint and against our brick home with the white windows, porch swing and railing, I think it would look great. They think I should do a bright white....
ReplyDeleteyou are so stinkin' funny!! paint the cat. ha!
ReplyDeleteI live in a appartment and the outside look of it isn't worth painting one of the 3-4 doors outside, but we have one inside (after the stairs) that I might convice my bf that it's worth of painting black.
ReplyDeleteIf not, them I'll put black vinyl lettering on it. but it would say something like "Chez nous" since we speak french...
Adorable!!
ReplyDeleteIf you want to paint everything black, I want to paint everything white. I'm soooooo tired of all the tan/beige/offwhite/cream/taupe/stinking neutrals in my house.
I want it light and bright!
I absolutely love it! What a great idea. I just found your blog about a week ago, and I can't stop following it. I am addicted.
ReplyDeleteI have a really ugly bedroom, not romantic at all. After reading your blog I tried to convince my husband to let me spray paint a bunch of our cheapy stuff black. He is not crazy about black, but I think it would be awesome. Thanks for the great ideas. www.themudpuddleproject.blogspot.com
Really love this!!!! May we blog about this on our blog? http://www.funkyjunksisters.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteYou are too cute!

I saw the same door on Chris's blog a few weeks ago and I have wanted one ever since. Yours looks just as fabulous. I'm waiting till my boys go back to school so they don't accidentally slam into the wet paint. ;)
ReplyDeleteLove it!!! Just that little bit made such a big difference in the picture. I want to be like you when I grow up.
ReplyDeleteThis is a really nice look for a garage entry door... AND, the black would hide Hubby's black finger smudges too. :-)

Hi! I've been reading your blog for a few weeks now and wanted you to know that you inspire me so much. I live in Okinawa, Japan (my hubby is Air Force) and can't wait to get back to the states to hit some thrift stores! They have a thrifty store on base here, but it never has anything cool.:( I love all your posts. Thank you for all your great ideas. When I get back stateside I too will be a decorating fool :) Happy decorating!
ReplyDelete:) Jodie
P.S. I forgot to mention that I love your new door. The words look great!
ReplyDeleteI love black moulding. I have to be careful or I would paint everything that stands still in my house black. By the time I finished that black would no longer be the new white. Then I'd have to start over with whatever the new black is.
ReplyDeleteYou did more than just the door there, Sarah ~ the moulding, the stairs, the hand rail ~ you were a busy, busy woman! I think it looks great and I like your text on the door. I did not notice that it is a bit off center ~ it looks good to me. It has been very humid here as well, so I can understand not doing certain things; let's hope we both get a break in the weather!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great transformation and a huge way to welcome not only friends but your family. There is NO PLACE like home! Love it!
ReplyDeleteummm Sarah? Your walls have no paint and your door looks fabulous! I think you should paint your walls something really fun! You also need to check out my tutorial on lettering so you can save a bazillion dollars. in the spirit of an Adam Sandler movie, "YOU CAN DO IT!"
ReplyDeleteLOL! You're hilarious!
ReplyDeleteI think I need to go paint my garage door...probably not black....but maybe with glow-in-the-dark paint so I can actually find the door (my garage is very dark and gloomy). LOL!
My side door is sooooo getting painted to-day! thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteLove it! I saw Just A Girl do it, too. Now I TOTALLY want to revamp my front door!
ReplyDeleteI've got the paint and the vinyl numbers now I just have to get out there and do it. I think this is one of the best makeovers of all time. I just love it!!
ReplyDeletetotally LURVE it!!!! keep the great posts coming. i need all the inspiration and motivation i can get. i took pictures of my 2 junk drawers and a junk cabinet in my kitchen and need to post it and admit my problem for saving and stuffing junk everywhere! love ya. have a great week!
ReplyDeleteThis looks great! And congrats on the garage decrapification! I have a carport, so everyone sees my crap at all times.
ReplyDeleteFirst, the grocery store bag in the paint pan is brilliant!!!
ReplyDeleteSecond, decrapification might be my new favorite word!
Third, I *heart* you!
Okay, Lorie said the grocery bag in the paint tray is brilliant! I totally agree!!!!! That sometimes stops me from painting because I don't want to clean the tray. I know, pure laziness. haha
ReplyDeleteYour door looks great. And I want you to know that I've totally been planning to copy Just a Girl's black door too. I'm just doing my front door in black with a white welcome vinyl sticker.
Just last night as we were pulling in the garage I thought "Man that door's ugly. I should paint it a really fun color." :)
ReplyDeleteYour's looks great by the way!
I love it, Sarah!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute idea, I love the finished product! And GENIUS idea for paint liners. I always end up spending way too much money at the paint store on stupid supplies, I will be using this idea from now on!
ReplyDeleteLove it! We need to repaint our garage...umm...black doors in garages don't show all the grimy fingerprints and shoe prints from people opening the door with their feet while carrying groceries! ;) My brother painted all the doors in their home blackish/brown...looks fab, just shows dust and fingerprints.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this and will totally be copying you!!
ReplyDeleteHow cute! I am finishing a garage redo too and I never thought to paint the door. I love it! I hope you don't mind if I copy you too!

This really makes me want to paint every door in my house black! But we just barely painted the new ones white...and I think black would make my small house look smaller. It is so beautiful though! Great job! I love that you painted the trim and stairs too!
ReplyDeleteI love your black door w/the vinyl lettering! I have black paint mixed and ready to go to paint our two doors - we just haven't had a chance to do it yet. Hoping to soon!
ReplyDeleteI likey likey!
ReplyDeleteI love it and I would never have thought to paint the door in our garage! May just have to now...
ReplyDelete:) emily
I never thought to beautify my garage (I mean, its just a garage right?) But this idea is great!
ReplyDeleteSarah~
ReplyDeleteDo you sleep???
:)
I love the door and I love the writing on the wall in the laundry room. What does it say exacty? Did you paint that on the wall or have the letters made? I love your projects, they are very inspirational.
ReplyDeleteI so may have to borrow this idea as well! Very nice! I would not paint the trim in laundry room. I think it will make it feel too dark in there.
ReplyDeleteLove it! I just finished painting 2 shelving units black and distressing them. I too love the look. A little tip to make distressing easier. Rub the areas you will be sanding with a candle, the wax won't let the paint stick. I always go back over the piece with some stain which highlights the distressed area.
ReplyDeleteI totally cannot tell that it's off center. Really. It looks fabulous. And I can't wait to see the decrapification results ;-)
ReplyDeleteOh, thank you for the kick in the pants. I saw that post of Chris's, too, but have lagged behind. This is just what I need to do. Now I've got double inspiration.
ReplyDeleteAnd I love the "You are home" message. Now that's a great idea.
Looks great! I am on the black kick too! I'm going to re-do the dining room cupboards. I keep singing that song in my head "Paint it Black"..lol! Can't wait to see the rest of the garage re-do.
ReplyDeleteOMG, I about had water come out my nose with the cat comment.
ReplyDeleteI am so doing this.
I am going thru a divorice, and am planning on redoing everything~ ie; as much as I have the energy and friendship for! Friendship might only go thru two rooms.
ANyway, I can so do this. Thank you for the idea!!
p.s. that is supposed to say:
life lessons and extra shot lattes. ugh I cant change it
Grrr, why isn't anyone else asking what a "signage store" is??? Am I totally living in a bubble. I want those letter for my black door this instant! How can I get them?
ReplyDeleteI love the look! I have SO thought about that for our door, but I haven't worked on it yet. Too many painting projects in que first. We have so much stuff in our garage, I can't wait to see how you revamped it all! :)
ReplyDeleteTotally love it! I do also adore my black paint!!!! But canned baby!!!
ReplyDeleteLove it! I have been debating what color to paint several doors and now am leaning more towards black :) Nice job. Did you use just regular old latex paint? Do any sanding?

ReplyDeleteWowzie! Luuuvvveee it!
ReplyDeleteI am SO gonna do this for my door....
It will say:
Hee Yaw: you ARE home!
xoxo
Don't you dare touch ANYTHING in that laundry room! It is already totally gorgemous!
ReplyDeleteGrins! Pamm
Love the garage door. I just did a garage makeover today on my blog. You should come and look.
ReplyDeleteCynthia
I LOVE it!!! I have the paint and vinyl numbers to do my front door, just waiting for it to cool off a bit to paint it - I can't do black on the front, though I'd love too - but a fresh coat of white and the vinyl numbers should look fresh! I'm excited...it's my next project now that the bulk of my office is done (ok, still need to decorate in there some more....)
ReplyDelete~TidyMom
Love it! When I first saw the thumbnail photo, I thought that the door said, "You Are Here", which is also sort of cool in a Zen, existential way. :)
ReplyDeleteI love that your door and trim are black. My husband and I recently bought our first home and I wanted to paint our front door black, it turned into a disaster though, if you're up close to it you can see some bubbles (that was my fault for doing it in the heat of the day) and it just ick. So tell me, is the secret using a roller brush instead of a spray paint? Or should we have just reprimed it first? (it had the factory coat of prime already).
ReplyDeleteI just love your blog, I come look ALL the time. You are way funny, and I really enjoy it.
I so love this idea!!!! I've always wanted a red entry door, but it wouldn't look good with the color scheme on my house. It never would have dawned on me to do the garage door if you hadn't posted this!
ReplyDeleteHas anyone told you you are brilliant?
It looks gorgeous! Who knew a black door could look so rich! I didn't even notice the off center lettering. Terrific job!
ReplyDelete*hugs*deb
Late question. Our door is fire rated to our garage so it is metal. Is your door metal or wood? I want to paint my garage door but am afraid paint would not stick to a metal fire rated door.
ReplyDeleteOurs is metal too -- I didn't prime and it's help up great, but you may want to just to be safe. :)
